So I was organizing the shop the one day this weekend ('puttering' we like to call it - which is really just spending time in the shop with no intention, letting yourself jump from task to task and hopefully organizing and putting things away slowly).
I realized I have at least 14 jack stands and 4 jacks. I'm not proud of it. One of the jacks is what I'd call 'useful', the other three are the cheap $50 ones you can get at advance and generally don't go low enough or high enough to do anything well. One of my useless ones comes in a nice blow molded container however so that is actually a sorta-nice 'travel' jack.
So that leaves 2 of these:

and 4+ of these:

That I'm really never going to need. I also know that they are so common that their value is basically scrap on the used market, and the jacks are so unuseful that I'd prefer not to give one to a friend.
So, I naturally wondered if there is something cool I could build with this plethora of junk. What would you build?
you could make a pterodactyl
I too have one of those crappy jacks in a blow molded case. Its on a shelf (low) where its real job of the past 11 years has been to provide some "bottom weight" to the shelving rack more than anything else. I'm sure I have not laid hands on it since then. That jack is probably from my early years of autox or 1994 (28 years ago.)
I have a "so much better" really old HF Alum jack but after many years it became unreliable. One day I reached for it and it jus wouldn't pump any more. Sure, it should be rebuilt but in the need for a "jack now" I replaced it with a floor jack that is mostly steel (too heavy) that I mostly hate because its so slow to pump. But, I needed one quickly and I still use this one that I dislike.
Of my 6 jack stands, there are only 2 that I really don't use. But, I have two, unused jacks hanging around my garage.
what should you make? $4 when you drop them off at the scrapper? $10 tax credit when you donate them to goodwill and claim the full MSRP price for them (doesn't everybody do this)
A hyundai Sundae cup car? (using them for their intended purpose)
I have an old scissor jack, the cheap kind they give you with cars, or used to anyway. I welded a nut on the drive end of it to fit a 3/4" socket, so when I'm out in the yard and I need to jack a car up quickly I use that jack and an impact with a 3/4" socket on it, which is usually the socket I need anyway to do lug nuts. The scissor jack has a nice flat bottom with no wheels, so it's perfect for lifting over earth.
I keep the jack well lubed so the screw drive doesn't overheat, and of course never go under the car when it's being held up by that jack.
You can make me happy by selling me two of them.
I have far less jackstands than I need ATM.

He tried to leave one of the useless jacks here, what does that say about our friendship?

Come by and take them please!
I can't seem to find your number, even though I have been there before. Shoot me an email at VintageDailyDriver at the mails of g00gle, and we can set something up.
Those jacks get recycled around these parts

This is of course the prudent and wise choice.
But words like prudent and wise are generally not allowed inside my shop!

Can these pterodactyls fly?
Can they fly with me riding them?
Junk the crappy jack stands. Keep them around and somebody's using them.
My dad picked a chop-saw out of the garbage and used it for a while then gave it to me. I didn't have a power one, only an old school miter box so I used it a lot but it was E36 M3ty and kinda scary to use so I tossed it.
My wife bought me a Harbor Freight new one that is E36 M3ty and kinda scary to use.

My theory: having a crappy thing is better than having nothing... but only so long as it does not prevent you from getting a better thing.

If you also have a couple plastic car ramps and a popup canopy you could build a full scale wrc pit diorama.
