37 year old IT -B Ford Mustang is available locally

Built as Race car, no title, but clean VIN

Is this too NEW for Vintage?

Too under powered for anything but Lemons Racing?

Seems well put together, has SCCA Log Books, spare engine, transmission, rear end and etc..

Would require the purchase of a trailer to get to events.

Thoughts??

Vintage varies due to region and organization, doesnt it?  

In 3 years it will be 40 years old,  that'll have to be vintage, right?  If so, sounds like you can run it in other stuff for a few years till you get to vintage.

Ive seen early miatas in vintage events, so it should be eligable already. Autocross it? Hill climbs? Open road? Cheap enough to challenge?

It's WAY underpowered for lemons racing as well.

Itb would be the 4 banger NA, right?  Even 10 years ago there were a few of those racing in lemons and they were dangerously slow.

A few vintage groups have started allowing IT cars. I would check with them.

I seem to recall the groups in your area being one of those groups.

The vintage group I run with would accept the car in one of the catch all classes.

IT cars are and always have been a great way to go racing.

Can you still run an IT prepped car in the SCCA street autocross class? That could be fun if so.

I think it would make a fun Lemons car. A team could run it as a 4 cylinder for a few races, upgrade the axles, brakes, etc, and then convert to a V8 or something later.

Racing it AS IS would be the plan,  (after a safety inspection) assuming we can find somewhere to race it.

You could run it in any number of local SCCA club races.  Doesn't CCR-SCCA have club races at CMP? I think they also do some track events at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Will have to check.  The only issue with Charlotte is there is a WHOLE LOT of hard concrete walls to HIT if I run out of talent.

 

However and 87 Fox body racer is a lot less valuable than the maxed out, overbuilt 2005 we just finished.

You won't be anywhere near the walls.  I'd be surprised if that hits 80 mph at the Charlotte roval.

I can confirm an ITB Mustang will do at least 95mph. I raced against on in the 90s and we'd go down the back straight together.........my car would do 95 mph.

I think you grossly underestimate an ITB class race car.  When you come out of a corner going twenty miles an hour faster, that minivan would have to make a LOT more horsepower to make up the difference before the braking zone for the next corner.

At Sebring in 2014, I got to ride with Andy Pilgrim in a bone stock 2nd Gen CTS-V Sport, a car built for performance driving.  We did a lap at 2:35 in that car with 420hp, Brembos, and sporty Michelins.  The lap record for Spec Miata at the time was 2:35,  A good Spec Miata at the time put 120hp to the ground.

Let me know if you have any questions, we have been running a 4 cylinder 89 Mustang for....lots of years now.   Durable, cheap on consumables if it handles well mid pack class B.

A spec miata is WAY faster than an itb 4 cylind3r fox body.  The miata has 30 MORE hp than one of these turds and about 600lbs less weight.  These came out of the factory with 90hp and 2700+ lbs!

I Raced one in lemons a few times.  It's painful.
