My w58 shifts buttery smooth when warmed up fully. But when cold 1-2 shifts SUCK and pretty much can't happen. Might be a synchro. I don't know. I'm running 75w90 and some Lucas heavy duty.
I learned from Honda fanboys that 10w30 in a Honda transmission makes it shift better. I won't try that In this transmission though. Wondering if there is a "Toyota ok" magical shift enhancing fluid for cold weather?

My experience with multiple different gearboxes is that they suck cold with synthetic in them. BRZ, Speed3, 350Z, S197 GT.........all cars I've owned, all switched to appropriately rated quality synthetic oil (Redline or Motul).
Now that it's below 45 in the morning, I don't even bother trying to get the BRZ into 2nd between my house and the highway. 1st -> 3rd.
Thinner oil makes better shifts.
Well, the W45 in my RN Truck had the same problem at around 200K on the clock. OK when warm, but cold mornings, that 1/2 shift was real grindy/clunky. I put Redline MTL in there and it has been fine since. There's 365K on it now, and I've had no problems with it to about 4 degrees F. Note that it shifts better the longer you run the MTL in there. And, what, Redline is a GRM Advertiser! Y0! It's Win-Win!
I shall buy this redline product. P
My Mk2 Supra with the same transmission really liked Redline MTL as well.

Okay, so that isn't just my BRZ? 1st to 2nd in the mornings is awful. It sucked the first winter with stock fluid, and it sucks this year with Redline. Once warm it's great. It sometimes leaves me doubting my ability to drive a stick, haha!!
I'll have to give the 1-3shift a try tomorrow morning.
