My truck is blowing gear oil out of the vent tube for my front diff, like a decent amount of oil. The tube goes from the diff up to the wheel housing liner. It's dropping down the liner on to the front suspension and getting all over everything. It's a good 2 feet of hose with a vent cap on the end of it.

I may have over filled it (yes it is possible), but it seems like it's progressively getting worse. What could be causing this?

Either too much oil, or too much heat.

The vent isn't tied into the trans as well, is it?

No, it's all by itself. I'm leaning towards that I overfilled it. It never did this before I topped it off a couple weeks ago.

Have you checked the level? Technically the correct level is often more like 1/2" below the hole with the diff level (check service manual), fill to overflowing and it might go and correct itself.

I'm positive at this point that's what it is. I know I filled it to the bottom of the hole, which I know you're not supposed to do, but I had a lapse in judgement. Oh well, I'll just let it push it out and I'll clean up the mess afterwards.

The people who decide that you're supposed to know how much a 1/2" is with the tip of your finger need a swift kick in the behind. Almost every differential I have ever dealt with is fill it to the hole. Plus, unless you have a lift, it's in a place that's really awkward to get your hand up in laying on your back.

You usually get away with filling to overflow, I prefer doing it that way on high mile stuff, gives some buffer if it has a slow leak, worst case it pukes a little. I have a little L shaped dipstick I made out of a piece of 10 gauge solid copper wire, nicked with cutters at 1/8" increments on the short part of the L.

We see alot of overfilled chevy trucks at work doing this. We had a guy for a few months who filled everything until it poured out of the hole. Alot of complaints there!

Well the rear diff fills to the hole. It even says it in the manual!

You mean, you're not supposed to fill the diff until the oil comes out of the convenient little fill tube that is attached to the frame?!? I've been doing it wrong all these years!
