So, about 3 weeks ago I bought a 2004 Titanium Mazdaspeed Miata with 76k on it. I absolutely love the car and don't want to sell it. However, here is the problem, this past weekend I rolled my ankle and just found out I tore my brevis tendon(about an inch long tear) in my left ankle. Sooooo, that means surgery and no driving a stick for 3-4 months.

Currently I am unemployed and am having a very hard time finding work in my field. So I have a couple of options:

1) Keep the car and wait for surgery until I find work and can buy a second car

2) Sell the car and buy an auto (which one though?)

3) ??????

I got a great deal on the Miata, so I most likely would not loose money on the deal, but money is still very tight.

Any of you had that type of surgery?? Everything I have read about it states that it is a royal PITA.

Thoughts, ideals, suggestions?? Thanks

Do you have insurance, and will it worsen the injury if you do not get surgery now?

In any case, I'd probably sell the car if money is that tight. As far as what to buy in place of it, an old Toyota Corolla/Geo Prism for $2000. Good gas mileage, cheap, and most importantly, easy to sell in 3-4 months when you're all healed and physically ready for a fun car again.

If you can swing it, how about going on CL and finding the best $1000 automatic car you can, like an XJ or Buick or something, which will be easy to sell for $1000 again when you are back on your feet

Oh man, when I read the thread title I was going to chime in and say don't sell your sports car for any reason, I did that 12 years ago and I'm only just getting ready for a new project. Never again. But then I read your situation. Really sorry. If you are covered by insurance get the surgery now. If you can swing Sonics suggestion of a cheap beater then I'd go for it. If not sell the MSM, by a cheaper NA Miata plus a $3k Jeep XJ and use the rest to survive on.

Good luck

I have insurance, however it is not the best. My doc said it may get worse it may not (great answer, I know). Just walking hurts even with a brace, not unbearable just annoying.

As far as buying a $1000-$2000 car, I do need something reliable. I have a couple of clients (pro bono) and can not miss a court appearance due to car issues.

I may try to bribe my father into driving it while I heal and use his truck (formerly my truck, lol).

thanks for the input!

If you have to sell it, sell it to a GRM'er with an agreement that you have first dibs to buy it back when that person is done with it.

If he refuses to give it back, you can buy my 04 Ti Grey Mazdaspeed Miata with 76k miles on it.

Deal, as long as it only costs me as much as this one, $6500 with extra set of wheels with new snow tires,

Thanks, he had it listed as a Mazdaspeed 6 for $8500, lowered it to $6500 and I was the first one there.

attach a stick to the clutch pedal and use your hand?

it worked for Chuck Yeager when he broke Mach 1 - well, maybe it was only the movie?

Why'd you buy a car when you're unemployed?

sell, make profit, buy cheap auto, use extra money to stay afloat till a job comes along, work, make the money back, buy the car back in a few years when you have your mid-life crisis.

Damn that is a deal. I would part with mine, but not for anything near that price. I would let it go for $14k without thought and maybe be willing to go as low as $11.5k. but not $6500. Of course, I'm not trying to sell it either.

Unless you can swing your dad's truck, I would sell the MSM for a decent profit, buy something cheap and reliable and have thousands left over to get you through the surgery and keep you going until you have a job again.

Also consider getting a second opinion. Some doctors are all about the $urgery when physical therapy can accomplish results w/ less risk.
