The 318ti Clubsport discussion got me thinking about this.

I had an e34 540i 6-speed which was one of ~1000 imported into the states. It was the most common color (about half of them were Schwarz).

I think part of the character of that car was it's rarity. I know it's not that rare, but it was a cool car.

My other unicorn was an e30 318is slicktop. From what I've read only about 3% of all e30s came with no sunroof.

When I first bought it:

5 years and many mods later (12 year old brother at the wheel):

A rust-free MGB GT with an LS1. Very rare :)

My Locost.

In terms of mass production numbers, probably the E39 M5. About 10,000 made over the production run worldwide, I have no idea how many USDM 2002 models in black there are.

My Insight is likely the rarest car I ever owned. I think something like 15K total across 6 years. Not many. There were more SVT Focus (I had one of those too) than Insights, I think.

They weren't really that rare at one time, but the 60 TR3 and 64 Spitfire are the rarest.

5-speed E39 Touring, Subaru Brat, Nissan 200SX SE V6, Volvo 850R, Audi Coupe Quattro, grey-market E28 528i...probably a couple I'm forgetting, but I feel like those were all pretty uncommon. Probably the E39 and CQ were the rarest by production numbers.

Ooo, I guess my 1994 R package Miata would be one of the rarest. Or my 1990 Canadian-spec Miata.

Actually, I'll bet I know what it was. A 1999.5 VW Golf in Jazz Blue. Rare enough that VW nerds don't believe it's real until you show them the door plate. Only available in Canada, and only for the short 1999.5 model. It WAS used on the R32 later, but 2.0 GLs? Nope.
My car was actually used as proof by the VWVortexers that the combo existed when the pedants started to argue

I had a slick top 1995 m3. Apparently they made very few of those. I also had a 6-speed e34 540i. Mine was maroon.

The folks had a 1953 Vette. It was a basket case project, and they sold it along some time around when I was in kindergarten. So, that's one of something like 300.

I owned a 2wd 1992 Suzuki Samurai. I don't know that I've seen another 2wd Samurai on offer in ages. Hell, I seldom see late Samurais anyhow. I don't know production numbers, but it has to be pretty rare to have both.

The CR-Z is too new, being as it is still in production, but I think I saw they're something like 0.2% of US Honda sales.

1989 Dodge Colt GT Turbo They say about 1500 produced

Bought this as a replacement to my slowly dying Mustang GT. Same color as the photo. What a fun little car. The funny thing is till I got crazy with the boost and fueling, it would get 30 MPG no matter how I drove it it seemed. It was an early production car with most parts stamped 3/88. Had all of the options including power mirrors, windows, upgraded stereo, and Cruise. It was an awesome little car.

My Esprit (RIP) was one of 115 made that year. If you count the color, I guess that would probably be something like one of 20. Is that rare?

I owned a 70 1/2 Ford Falcon 2 dr sedan, they were only in production for a few months,IIRC December'69 to April '70. It was basically a Torino formal roof hard top with a B pillar and taxicab no-frills plain vinyl interior. Mine was 302/c4 powered, but any engine available for Torinos could also be ordered in the Falcon, so there are 428SCJ factory built 70 1/2 Falcons out there. I miss it

The rarest I've owned personally was a Buckler Mk 15, or rather the remains of it. I have no idea how many they built, but its probably less than 20. Other than that, an Elan Plus 2 (total production was roughly 3600), and two Europas (two of 9300).

Dear old dad traded an MG YT (one of 877) for an MGA Twin Cam (one of 2111) back in the late 80's. He's also had an MG PA (one of roughly 2000 or 2500 if you include the MG PBs).

I have never owned anything particularly rare.

Edit: I just remembered that in the early 90's I owned a '66 Karmann Ghia with the original floors and rockers...in Michigan.

Not a rare car. Given what Michigan road salt did to Ghias, 356's and the like, it was rare to find in Jackson when I bought it.

My dad's 928 is a 78 (first year), manual, no sunroof. Not sure on production numbers, but should be pretty rare. Kind of a shame that it got gutted and turned into a track car.

I had a pile of common cars before I got into German stuff.

2001 Allroad- I've heard about 15,000 were produced in this entire generation

2005 Phaeton- 820 North American Phaetons that year (3,000 over three years)

2007 Passat- Don't know the actual number but of all Passats I've heard it goes something like this: 1 in 10 was a wagon, of those 1 in 10 was the 3.6 VR6, of those 1 in 10 was 4Motion. So mine is the rarest beast of them all.

Mine was probably my 77 RX-3 SP, but the sad part is I only owned it for 6 days before it was totaled. I suppose my REPU is pretty rare. I also owned a 74 RX-4 coupe which is probably rare these days. I like to think my early production 78 RX-7 GS is rare, but probably not. Maybe due to its low mileage, and only two owners it is rarer, but probably not rare. I know it's a rare one year only color though. My Delica is rare here in the USA, but not worldwide.

My CTS-V wagon. Something like 2200 over the four year run. I'm not sure what the take rate on the 6mt was, but it was fairly high compared to pretty much anything else. I still see 2 or three of them around.
