Had a failed front wheel bearing in my 2015 Mazda6. Replaced the bearing this morning and took a test drive. Then I was greeted with a money light + ABS light.

Do these axles need to be clocked a specific way or the sensors need to be reset somehow? I'm pretty certain that I didn't touch the sensor.. but anything is possible. Before I throw new parts at it I thought I'd ask here.

Any guesses?

Wheel bearing In backwards?

There are quite a few cars with magnets in the seal on one side of the bearing to trigger the sensor. They usually have a tiny, easily missed notice on the packaging indicating direction of installation

Thank you. Quite possible! I will have a look.

Pulled it back out and found that I smashed the sensor. Oops.

I had one done on my Mazda5  at the dealer that had to be redone cause it wouldn't read.

Pretty sure I've totally berkeleyed up a simple wheel bearing replacement!

When I pulled the old hub and wheel bearing out.. I didn't remove the abs sensor - so when I inserted the new hub and bearing I apparently allowed this axle flange to make contact with the sensor.

Then I drove around the block with a flange at the outer end of the axle apparently rubbing on the sensor. Bending the flange and breaking the sensor.

So now if I put the new sensor in the hole - the bent up axle flange is gonna ruin the new sensor.

...it appears that I need to r/r the axle now.

Coincidentally this is exactly what a tire shop did to my wife's Subaru almost exactly one year ago.

Yep... did that to a Subaru once.

But not with the axle flange... when I was cleaning the rust out of the bore, I hit the sensor.

That I didn't remove because 99% of the time the sensor will break when trying to wiggle it out, because of the rust deathgrip.  So, I didn't even bother trying.

Of course, on that Subaru, the sensor fell right out...

Pete - I'm pretty sure the is means I get to buy a new axle. Does that sound correct?

Nah, that's just a dust shield.  Straighten it, or remove it if you can't unbooger it.

Really? I thought maybe that flange is what the speed sensor reads off of... If removing it is an option that seems possible.

edit: this is the flange that got wrinkled up like a pie pan

The wheel speed sensor reads of of magnets embedded in the wheel bearing seal.

That is why an ABS fault after wheel bearing installation is usually the result of putting the bearing in backwards, so the tone ring is facing the hub, not the sensor.

Got the bent shield straightened and back together. Appreciate the assist, Pete.
