yeah when the primary family vehicle gets to where I'm tired of dealing with it we'll probably replace it with an EV assuming they make them in minivan form by then. There's a good 5-10 years left on it though as we bought it new in 2018.

Still, I have kicked around the idea of picking up a used Nissan Leaf as a third car for short errands. When the 2018+, 150 miles per charge models come down in price I think they'll be a really good value if all you need is basic A->B transportation.

 

Thinking about that idea more... maybe at some point EV conversion kits will be popular enough that I can convert the GTI to electric. It's a southern, completely rust free car with a chassis that was designed to accept AWD so it would be pretty rad to power the rear wheels and install the battery pack where the engine and transmission were. Add some VW parts bin brake upgrades to get some nice 340x30mm front brakes and larger, vented rear rotors and the extra weight wouldn't be a problem. Hell, with some clever placement of components maybe I can get a 50/50 weight balance.

I am far too excited about this idea.
