Hello - As the saying goes, long time reader first time poster. I've been a motor head for most of my life, current project is a C5 corvette that I just picked up at an amazing price. I haven't done any "formal" racing, but I've hit a few open track days at HPR with the GTO and then E30 BMW that I had. The GTO just wasn't good on track so I sold it with the plan to get something that was better on the road course, but you know how life gets in the way.

So a few years later I picked up a $500 E30, stripped it out and had a ball with it. It's a bit of a long story involving another E30 that my son bought then got totaled (not his fault), a third E30 to replace the second E30 that fried a motor due to an exploded water pump and then combining the 3 of them to get one car that ran for a bit before breaking a rocker arm.  So first and second cars to the scrap yard, third car is in my garage getting a 5.0 Mustang motor transplant.  BTW, let me know if anyone in Colorado needs E30 parts, I have a bunch laying around that I'll probably never use.

Anyway, thanks for reading, I'm sure I'll be asking question as I get into work on the C5.

Hi everyone, my name is Casey. *waves*  Have been lurking on and off for awhile and decided I should join since I'm seeking experience and advice that is unbiased and is focused towards how I like to use my cars, and this seems like the best place to find it.  I've loved cars since I was a young child(26 now), and I actually learned about them from my mom.  She taught me, and my brother, everything we know and was really the catalyst in our love for cars.  I love all kinds of cars, there's at least one car from every manufacturer I'd own; so I don't know the meaning of brand loyalty I guess.  Which is a blessing and a curse I suppose, makes it a lot harder to choose something when you can't write most them off because of the brand or where it was made.  Anyway, thought I should drop in and say hello and share a bit about myself before bothering everyone.cheeky

Hey kids, found this after schlupping around the forums for a few months and joined up for the hope of finding someones Subaru XT.

I'm half kidding, of course. I'm here to absorb more car information like some kind of car-forum bottom feeder, filtering information like flotsam. I'm young, and I've only gotten into cars thanks to Mad Max: FURY ROAD which I have decided should be the model for my life. I currently am learning cars on a 1987 Toyota MR2 AW11, with help from my stepdad who gets to watch me bumble around and act like I know things.

My first post...

Just signed up for the forums after being a longtime reader and subscriber of the magazine. I’ve been a car guy pretty much my whole life. My Dad was into cars, and he was a parts guy like I am. I guess I got it early on from him, and his various interesting (but never valuable or fast) cars that he always drove. I have lots of early memories riding on the battery shelf of various MGs, driving around in Corvairs, and on the engine cover of cab over Econolines, among others. I hated some of them as a kid in school, but I’d probably drive most of them now. Funny how that works. My first car at 16 was a 66 Plymouth Belvedere sedan with a slant 6. Traded that for a built engine for my next car, a 71 MGB GT, that I bought when I was 17. From there a GRM article circa 1999 made me think it’d be a good idea to buy an XR4Ti for my next car.... I was really into those for over a decade, owning a few over the years, and putting more than 100k miles on 2 different ones! I was also into SVT Contours for a while, and owned 3 of them, finally selling the last one for a Honda Odyssey when the 2nd kid came along. My Euro Ford fascination also carried over to mk1 Fiestas. I’ve had 2 including my current project that I’ll post about.. I’ve also dabbled in VWs, using a Rabbit GTI as my daily for a few years. My current stable consists of a Fiesta ST for my daily, a Flex for family hauling, a 73 Courier for light duty truck stuff, and my project Fiesta. Looking forward to posting some more... looks like my kinda place based on the projects I’ve already read about!

Hi All!

My name is Josh. I've always had an interest in cars, but my parents weren't really "car people" so I didn't have much encouragement growing up. My uncle and grandfather, however are and spent much of their working lives as mechanics.

I don't have the most involved car history, but figured I'd start by giving some background of family and friends before going much further :)

Parents: not into cars, they see them as an appliance mostly

Uncle, grandfather: life-long mechanics. My uncle ultimately taught me the first things I learned about cars - how to change rotors and pads

My now father-in-law: Original owner of a 1973 Dodge Dart Sport and reliably does the annual Power Tour. He also does all work on his cars himself

My dad, however, did buy a 1995 Miata 5-speed right around the time I began driving. This ended up being the car I learned on (straight to stick) and drove most often while on my learner's permit. My parents didn't think it was ultimately safe as my first car and they got me an Acura RSX.

Anyways, my car story really begins after meeting my wife (2005). At the time, I had a 2003 Acura RSX base model and not long after meeting her it needed a new starter. I didn't have the money to take it to a shop, so my father-in-law figured we'll pick a starter up at the parts store and replace it ourselves. To get to the starter in an RSX requires removing the intake manifold and, of course, the throttle body and intake. These were all firsts for me. Anyways we put the new starter in buttoned it all back together and it worked without issue. This got the gears turning in my head - "that wasn't so bad, so......what else can be replaced to improve performance"

I owned the car since new in 2003 and over the course of the years things would wear and I'd upgrade them with aftermarket parts and, occasionally, replace things "just because" to help improve it. By the time it was all said and done it was engine swapped (TSX motor - 2008 K24A2) with mounts, AEM EMS Series 2 ECU, full boltons, cams, straight cut PPG Gears (with plans for turbo, that never came to fruition), etc, etc and was making 232whp/184wtq on a dynojet. Very shortly after I began autocrossing it and it continued to be my one and only car.

Fast forward to 2012 and the RSX had an engine bay fire and very quickly after bought it back from insurance (while receiving a $3000 check) and purchased a friend's 2002 Acura RSX-S. Over the course of a week I swapped all of my old performance parts into the new RSX and sold off the old drivetrain from the 2002.

This RSX was my daily driver until 2015 when I took a job working from home and it sat in a garage only being driven occasionally for the sake of keeping the fluids moving and to put a grin on my face.

Early 2017 I started looking for a new toy as I didn't like seeing the RSX sitting around. Despite all the money and time I put into the RSX, my wife and I only have a 2 car garage and I refuse to leave one of our cars in the driveway so the RSX would have to go in place of the next toy. I got it through my head that I had to have something lightweight and RWD this time. So my first obvious options were a Miata or an MR2 (mid 90s). After some debating, the Miata became my choice because I learned to drive on one and because they are so widely used in racing. I began researching the nuances of the different generations and came to the conclusion I wanted an early year NB2 and narrowed it down further to a 2001 6-Speed with Torsen LSD.

After looking for several months I found "my" Miata, a 2001 Miata LS 6-Speed with Torsen LSD with 30k miles about 3 hours from my house. I talked with the seller, an older person, and had to have a look. I was like a kid in a candy store when I took it for a short drive. I'm a bit tall (just north of 6ft 1in) so it's cramped with the top up but still I had to have it.

Now the 2001 Miata LS 6-Speed sits in my garage, and is driven top down always except for highway driving or when it's raining while out.

It sits next to my wife's car, a 2008 Subaru Legacy GT Spec-B that was owned by my dad. He gave it to us when he realized my wife's previous car (2006 New Beetle) no longer fit our lifestyle change after having a baby as he felt it was much safer. He also wanted a new toy himself and purchased a 370Z :)

Anyways, sorry for the very long post, it ended up longer than I was planning on when I started it. I'm glad to be a part of this forum and look forward to reading about everyone else's stories!

Thanks Ed! Glad to be here! The mileage and that it was completely stock is what won me over. The goal with the NB Miata is to keep it (mostly) stock and compete in my local SCCA autocross in ES class so I can enjoy the car for what it is while focusing on driving skill

Hey everyone!

I figured I would introduce myself and give a bit of history. I'm 20 years old and live in Iowa. My first car was a 03 Monte Carlo ss which was sold around a year ago with 250k miles under it's belt. I now drive a 07 Toyota Corolla due to my 100 mile a day commute, traveling for work, and my general love for going on long road trips. Its not the most fun inspiring car to say the least, but every car has its perks, and you have to make the most of it, not to mention averaging 35 mpg isn't all bad.  I am also the owner of an 02 Ninja 500r and possibly more importantly a three wheeled golf cart frame with a 25 hp Briggs and Straton. I'll have it back to its former tire smoking glory someday, maybe, hopefully...

Anyways, I've been reading on here for the last few months and there is a lot of knowledge floating around on this site. I look forward to learning a lot from all of you guys!

Hey all,

Been lurking on the forum the last few months, finally decided to join the board.

I've been obsessed with cars, specifically Volkswagens since I saw Herbie the Love Bug. Apparently as a child, the views of  Buddy Hackett and Dean Jones ripping down tracks against Jaguars and Corvettes in a Beetle kind of stayed locked into the deep recesses of the mind.

A few forums have been motivating me to rebuild my '76 bug and hopefully, I'll have an extremely slow build thread posted soon and my goal to try to turn it into a rally inspired car.

Nice to meet you all!

Hello all! Been lurking here for a while, ever since i followed a link to Mazdueces R63 rebuild. Hard to ignore a story of a 57k$ engine quote..  finding this website had me thinking “how have i not known about this??” Im now a subscriber.

36 years old, central florida(Deland for you locals). Life long Nissan owner. Currently have a 2000 frontier 4cyl ive had for 18 years now and 2012 frontier Pro-4x  crew cab to haul my 2.5 year old son who loves fast cars. He watches Top gear and the grand tour with me and yells at the cars.  I plan on buying a NB Miata or 240sx as a fun car. Pretty much going to be a Miata since 240sx’s are way to hot($$) thanks to the drift crowd.  Gotta get some other projects out of the way first.

Hi everybody!

Long time, first time.  Actually a mag subscriber and just now coming around to the forums, which will probably suck me in.  I read each issue thoroughly.

About 5 years ago I picked up a dilapidated $1700 mr2  and over 3 years built it into a pretty competent street car.

I got bit by the track day bug, and after 4-5 track days with pretty bad luck, I hydroplaned into a wall!

It was a bummer, but MR2s are relatively cheap, so I picked up another one and built it even wilder.

You can follow the build of this car and my track day antics closely at apex-attack.com (not trying to divert traffic away from here though!).

Can't wait to get sucked into these forums and build threads, seems most useful car forums have gone the way of the dodo, but these look very active.  Cheers!

Mike
