My '88 MX-6 GT has a test pipe on it currently. It's not going to pass inspection. I can use a 2nd gen cat on my car to pass inspection.

Will this pass?

I guess my real option is to buy a clamp on cat and hack up the test pipe, but I'm cheap and lazy.

No real experience with these but I am pretty sure that is just a straight pipe with no catalyst (based on price and description). It's meant to replace the Cat position and appearance wise. Note the "offroad only" restriction.

I think the description is a bit vague because they are "wink wink" selling a replacement Cat which is just a straight through pipe made to look like a cat (thus the "resonator, wink wink" description), in case someone looks.

The description calls it a test pipe too many times to be a cat.

That should still pass in PA, depending on your location. Most places it is just a visual inspection for pre OBDII cars. If it looks like a cat, doesn't matter what is or isn't inside it.

If its just a visual, build a dummy cat.

"his Test Pipe / Resonator is for Race and Performance, Off Road only." - In any case it's not a CAT at all.

Sniffer, OBDII, or Visual? Thunderbolt cats have always been super cheap and pass OBDII, they fail the nose test so I'm sure they fail the sniffer.

Must be sniffer or visual, I just noticed its an 88. Some e85 and a good tune with a standalone should pass the sniffer catless for 1988 standards with ease. E36 M3, even 93 with a real tune and catless should pass that.

My '88 SAAB c900 turbo has an ex-cat, now resonator. If I bring it in hot it passes the Sniffer test no problem. I live in the Philly suburbs where we have visual and sniffer test for pre OBD2 cars.

I've passed sniffer tests w/Thunderbolt cats on 2 1988 vehicles in both NJ & AZ. one even had an extra .6L of displacement and still passed with low #'s.

Like said above - PA does not sniff test the exhaust so an ineffective cat will pass as long as there is one present on the vehicle.

However - NJ used to sniff and we put a $105 ebay cat on a friend of mine's E36 M3. It passed fine.

OG poster is listed in Pittsburgh, so yeah he will have to deal with passing a sniffer unless he's north a little. I've seen guys pass with those for the visual but have problems with the sniffer. I've had good luck with these and it's really not much more money. cat. I mean, I've breezed through with those.
