I took the truck out today, and noticed a new chip on the windshield, dead center of my line of site.

It's small, smaller than a dime, but will be enough to be a problem when I need inspected again because of its location.

Doesn't Safelite or someone offer free chip repair? Or is this something I could do myself fairly cheap?

I think most glass places will not do repairs if they are in the direct line of sight of the driver.

I’ve used the repair kits, both cheap and brand name, and the brand name (can’t remember which brand) was significantly better.  Just follow the directions to the letter.  As it is, I think the good kit was nice more than $20.  The repair wasn’t perfect, but it was probably good enough that you’ll pass inspection, unless you have a very strict inspector.

Edit:  I think Permatex was the brand name one.

Safelite chip repair isn't free, but depending on your insurance and regulations in your state it may be covered.  I'd get it fixed sooner than later, before it has a chance to expand into a crack.

FWIW my GRM solution has always been to fill the chip with superglue. It’s still visible, but I’ve never had one spider crack after doing it.

Superglue works pretty well

They drill the center of the strike and superglue it.  You can do it yourself fairly easily.

I recently got Safelite to come replace the cracked windshield in our brand new van with 6k miles and do two chip repairs on my 996.

The tech said that the 996 had already been fixed.  I couldn't tell, but he said they were already 'drilled 'n filled.'

PS...a Toyota Sienna has a huge ass windscreen.  $350 to replace.  A 996 has an itty bitty windscreen by comparison.  Safelite wants a little over a grand to replace it.

Bottom line -- fix vs replace depends on the car.  For a pickup truck, I'd probably just live with it or do the windshield.

Windshields are not covered by my liability insurance. But, local, been here forever glass place will fix it for $20. I'll let them do it.

On a side note, a 95 Saturn SL2 has a windshield that curves at the A pillars. Everywhere wanted $375 for it, there was only one at "central windshield warehouse" that all the places seem to share.

Ask anyone that's owned an xB1 about windshield repairs... (I read forums with people on their 4th one. That straight up and down windshield was like a target.  My current beater xB has 4 chips I need to have USAA cover for free this year.)

FJ Cruiser same problem. Usually about 1 a year. Every rock that hits it leaves a chip, and about a quarter of those run immediately. I am very good friends with my local glass guy and he gives me a good deal for green money.

My outbacks windshield had 8 big chips and 4 crosswise cracks in 2 years before I replaced the windshield. One week later, it got a rock hit at the base of the windshield and cracked up in front of my line of sight. The glass shops told me they love outbacks.
