Well that snow storm turned out to be a bust. I had to drive an hour away just to find some ice on the roads.

Damn good thing I had snow tires on the ZAV.  Otherwise we might have had to slow down on the way to the Mexican restaurant yesterday.

Dateline Detroit, Saturday 19-Jan-2019:

I took my daughter to the NAIAS at about 10AM, at about the peak snowfall rate but before the plows and salt trucks had worked their magic.  Probably 4” at this time. Blizzaks?  Check.  AWD?  Not necessary, but check.

coming home around 3PM, roads leaving downtown are worse than earlier but still not terrible.  Ramp from 375N to 75S, newish X1 pushes into outside wall at maybe 15 mph, brake lights never lit up, just bounces back into the travel lane and keeps going.  Not even 10 minutes later, totally flat and straight section of 96W, older FWD Malibu starts a tank-slapper in the right “lane”.  I check mirrors, slow down to give the performer his space, and tell Helen “Watch this!”  His corrections are late every time, and on the 3rd or 4th slap he gets into the deep stuff on right shoulder, rotates CW and noses into the right side wall *hard*.  Still spinning, front clip is berkeleyed, crosses full width of 96W but somehow doesn’t hit left side wall.  Front tires are spinning the whole time, dude’s got spirit and has chosen to stay in the gas.  Car never stops, I’m guessing min speed through all this is maybe 30 mph.  I figure seizure, heart attack, etc, and call 911, get transferred to MSP, meanwhile dude is accelerating away from us and exits at Southfield, dragging front fascia and looking out over buckled hood.  Helen was more wigged out than impressed.  I applaud the quick decision-making that led to “I just hit the wall pretty hard, now let’s see how long it’ll run!”

I flew out to OKC for the week and missed our first snow. Dang it; I suppose it’ll still be there when I get home.

It was so windy that it doesn't look like much snow but there were a few drifts to plow.

We got hit with 14ish inches over the weekend so far - strong breeze straight out of the north bringing yuge lake effect.

Fortunately, I have this asset: teenager with plow truck. He's spent about 20hrs in there so far, just got home and going back out at 0100.

Being old, decrepit and lazy, I havent gone outside since noon yesterday.

Just for the record.  The right side of my car was clear, and there was actually some bare grass on the neighbor's lawn.

Very light, dry snow.  Could probably have "shoveled" with a leaf blower.  I'll be missing this stuff in March when it snows like wet concrete.

Looks like the roof rack rails to most of the hit on the wagon. GTI is unscathed. Truck - meh, it's a truck.

Not one day earlier, my NB Miata was parted there.

What we've had in Philly so far:

Although judging by a few small piles on my neighbors' yards, it appears we got something a little more substantial while I was away.

I did find that doing donuts in 15” of snow on all seasons in a wrx is almost enough to get the car stuck.  Almost.

Most of the snow is gone and we wont have anymore because Pyro got a new toy today:

She is trying out the loader for the first time and playing with what little snow we have left.

And every time they decided to park an idling train next to your house on a three or four day weekend.

At least it means the neighbors probably don't complain too much about backyard shenanigans

Parking lot at work is pure ice.  ABS activation for MINUTES.

Turned HAL completely off in teh S60R (push button: DSTC Reduced push button: DSTC On push button: DSTC Reduced push button: DSTC On push button: DSTC ANTI-SKID OFF), manual 1st gear, brake torque for max boost, let off the brake and... AND...!!!!

Car just berking GOES.  Even on ice and dried-out year-old cheapo Cooper winter tires.

How utterly dull.

Perfect for a daily driver.  I don't want "exciting", I want predicable and safe with a side of "Whee!"
