So a friend at work has a cool project car that is probably 80% done, and more than likely has 95% of the parts to finish it. It is exactly cheap while being close to 3x challenge price, and isn't normally a car I would consider, but after seeing it I am intrigued.
The car is an 87 Camaro Iroc-Z that started life as a 305 5-speed car. He owned it for many years while doing tons of work to it, and then sold it to a friend of his. Recently within the last two years or so he bought it back and has been going through it to make it even better.
The body is in good shape with little to no rust, and the chassis looked clean underneath for a New England car. I don't know a ton about it, but I know it has a 383 stroker in it, along with some crazy ram air intake system, long tube headers, different heads, a really expensive 6-speed transmission, all new interior that isn't installed yet, some newer leather seats, and who knows what else. The owner usually doesn't spare any expense.I took a bunch of pictures of it in case you guys can tell me what the stuff is, and if it is worth taking on such a project.
The only major issue if I were to get it is the fact that it is on an island, and might make it tough/more expensive to get it home as a non-runner.

Sounds like the price is low and your interest is high. If you think you can finish it and it will be a fun toy, you are really just looking for our confirmation to make yourself feel better.
The only reason I really see not to get it is if it would be your only car. I always have a 4x4 and a high mpg car with fwd. Any car is ok as long as I have those. You got a good DD?
Don't look for us to make you feel better about your buy. If you want it, get it. Work the ferry home into the cost.

3x challenge price? No. Nice drivetrain but much assembly required and still a lot of suspension work ahead to make it handle commensurate with the power all on a car that you'd never be able to sell for what is invested in it.
I think Chris may have more cars than i have kids. Lol
305 Iroc-z ... as a kid, this was my dream car. I think I have every single Road & Track where this car appeared.
$6k is too much for a project though.
I can tell you that is a Richmond/Doug Nash six speed.
Expensive transmission, but not one you see many people using due to the popularity of the T-56.
I'd say no because it has T-Tops, which makes the chassis of a 3rd gen F-body more flexible than a European gymnast. Also, you need to remember that 3rd gen F-bodies are basically worth nothing, so when it's time to move on, you will have to eat the vast majority of money and time you have put into it
It does have some good parts, the Richmond trans and 383 with Superram intake setup, which is no longer being made but it a great piece. You can do subframe connectors to stiffen the car up, roll bar will help too. 3rd gens are on the lower side of the price market, but it seems they are starting to gain some again, especially IROCs and GTAs. Is it worth $6K? not sure without seeing it, but that probably would be on the high end. It's not a ridiculous price but would be hard to sell and make money.
i wouldn't but i'm not into F body

berkeley that E36 M3! We all know T-Tops are necessary for your mullet!
For 6k, I would expect something besides the POS Aussie 9-bolt rearend in it. Half the price and it might be worth looking into, Doug Nash or not.
The seller did say the rear axle is a weak point.
And I hate threads like these... Off to read about mulletmobiles on thirdgen.org.....
