I don't think BMW offered the 840 with a 6 speed in the US. You can find an 850 with a 6 speed, but not the 840, unless it was swapped after the fact.

RealOEM agrees with you.

+2. SWMBO was seriously considering an 8 series a few years ago and this jives with anything we read/learned.
that is what is said they were not available in the states with 6 speeds only in Europe. At the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix last year i saw one and the owner told me it was a special order thru a local BMW dealer and then another one was on a lot outside of Miami Fla and i was told it was also special ordered. then i talked to retired BMW employee who worked for north american corprate and he said that there was some special ordered 840's with 6 speeds. i know i am looking for mermaid riding a unicorn....
Or is it possible that the 2 you saw were overseas delivery cars for military personnel? Although I guess they must have been generals or admirals if the were rocking 840s
My SAAB c900 turbo was originally an overseas delivery car, and it has some minor differences from standard US delivery cars.
I have seen 2 840 6speeds in the US, but not sure wether they were swapped or factory.
I also know there was an Alpina B12 (looked to be a 7/10 pt car) at Redline BMW a few months ago ... Rennie, the owner, is featured on Grassroots quite a bit.

Interesting. I just sold my 1997 840ci (with auto). During my ownership and research, I never saw any mention of a factory produced, US-spec 840 w/ manual transmission. I've seen several that have been swapped though. The 6 speed from the e39 540 bolts right up evidently. Had I liked the car better, I would have considered swapping in an S62 in place of the M62, along with a 6 speed, and built an M8!
well it looks like i found one. i will be headed to memphis tn. this car is suppose to have 22k miles on it and was brought into the country by a BMW dealer in Fla. it is a one owner car and is suppose to be in showroom condition.............now does anyone need a retactable roof miata
Can I just hang out with you all the time? You always seem to find some sweet, rare stuff. I'm good for gas refuels and convenience store runs. Plus, I can mow a bitchin' lawn and have supreme mastery of all the bachelor cuisine arts.

VERY unlike any other BMW I've ever owned. Lazy throttle response, floaty suspension, disconnected steering feel, etc. Granted some or all of that might have been due to old/worn components (1997 year model with ~96K) but it wasn't nearly engaging enough for me to want to find out.
To cutter67, we need pics! Hope the car you found is wonderful.
