Install the Caprice drivetrain in the 525 and part out the leftovers?
So what do you do when you have a big fleet and you are attached to everything?
If whatever solution you find will also apply to a list of cars 3 times as large.. let me know.
I'm empathetic... really I am. I bought 2 basket case XR4TIs recently, which brought my project car total to 6 cars, plus my daily driver Focus ST that is due for some maintenance/upgrades. When my father came over and saw the 2 new XRs, he said "When? When are you ever going to get any of these done?" To which I responded: "What if it's never? What changes?" Seriously. Sure they take up space. But otherwise, they are what they are, and nothing is really going to change (for me) whether I keep them or not. But I do get enjoyment out of owning them and the aspirations they inspire. One day I will get them done. Or not. And if not, well, not much different than if I didn't have them at all, so I might as well keep them, because I like them.
The lack of multiquote on this site is incredibly frustrating at times like these...
maschinenbau - yeah, I know it won't sell as a non-running vehicle, but it will always be a project on some level. If I finish it to where it isn't a project (no door seal leaks, no vibrations, fix the rust, fix the AC) I'd probably just keep it.
Truck's AC works for about a week and then leaks out; I have a seal kit for it, but never had motivation since it was still cold out. Hoping it's just a bad oring somewhere. I'll let you know on the AC stuff; I have some equipment but it's been years since I've used any of it.
Don't need much towing for the bikes. Probably 2000 lbs tops for 3 bikes and the trailer. BMW wagon has sedan rear springs in it right now...it's way too soft, but a relatively easy fix if I wanted to tow. Biggest problem is many dirt bike areas don't have car-friendly parking. The Caprice got stuck a few times, or couldn't even get into some of the lots, and it has decent suspension articulation.
Driven5 - interesting project maths. I'll have to play around with that one a bit...
Lemons car stays since it's not really mine. Just happens to be at my house right now.
I honestly have no idea what the Caprice is worth, but I know what I have into it, and I have a rough idea of my break point of sell vs. keep. Put a few hundred miles on it this weekend, and I think you guys have convinced me to list it for sale.
I have indeed thought of a V8 525 swap....but both logically and financially, if that ever gets swapped it would be to an S52.
Darkbuddha - that's where I've been on this whole deal for awhile. I do get a lot of enjoyment out of working on them, and driving them. However, sometime in the last 6 months it started getting a little stressful, starting when the Caprice broke down. That started the thought process of wondering what I'd rather be doing, since I started not having enough time to do everything.
I think at this point, the TL250 gets fixed and listed for sale as planned, and I'll list the Caprice for sale as well. At that point, I'll see how things feel. If I'm back to being carefree, I'll keep what I've got. If not, I'll consider selling the E34 and using the truck as a dd. Even just thinking about letting the caprice go feels so incredibly sad, though...
Looks like this may have taken care of itself. E34 potentially got totalled on the way in to work this morning. Front frame horns shifted over probably a half inch, and front left strut tower is nowhere near where it should be. Not how I wanted this to go.
Yeah, no injuries at the moment. Lady in the malibu beat herself up on the steering wheel because the airbag didn't go off, and I banged my head on the window pretty good.
And I know it's just a car... E34s are built like tanks by the way, as are, apparently, modern chevy malibus.
Wow.. hard luck. Glad you're okay. So now you've likely got 3.5 cars. Sell the box wagon and buy a new Swiss army knife, or project car. Don't lose the inertia on your decision.
