Gorgeous, and I'm not even really a BMW guy. Makes me wonder how many pieces that cage is... not likely it was welded in and painted in the car?

Also... why go back to the D-pillar with the cage? Don't wanna crush the groceries in an accident? =P

That way you can have rear passengers with head injuries as well?

Plus, in the case of a roll-over, it'll create a nice pass-thru to pull the bodies out of the front seats after the a-pillars collapsed.

I'd think the A-pillar itself should be strong enough to hold themselves up more or less, considering how much roof there is? Guess this is a car from the 90's...

In general, A pillars are substantially less strong than a properly-constructed roll cage's front hoops.  They will support the car if you pick it up, turn it over, and set it down on the ground gently, but the dynamics of a rollover crash are usually a lot more violent than that.
