This Pontiac Trans Am could make anyone feel like they're walking on sunshine with its special order finish in, wait for it, Sundance Yellow.

Rocking a classic red and orange screaming chicken across the hood, this 1979 Trans Am is sure to turn heads in any parking lot or any show.

Not that I'm in the market for this car *at all* but I would so much rather have this car in another color (preferably white) without the chicken on the hood.

The chicken and the color seem to clash. However, the Sundance Yellow is striking.

I don't think i've ever seen a Trans Am in that color.  A Formula for sure, but not a Trans Am.  If it's as clean underneath as it is up top I think I could deal with the red and orange bird and 6.6 callouts..

My father has a friend who's a diehard Pontiac guy and in the early '80s he had a '75 Trans Am, 400 4-speed, Buccanneer Red with the black and white interior, honeycomb wheels. He went through and put new quarter panels on it and had a bunch of work done and had it shot in fresh paint but didn't have the screaming chicken applied because he hated the black and yellow hood bird and said it "looked like someone threw up on the hood".

I'm 100% pro chicken. I've never really been into pastels but for some reason it fits here. But an automatic? I'll pass

Not to be confused with the Yellow Bird Edition Firebird.

Maybe it’s because my dad had an F-body, but something about that automatic shifer just works for me.

How could you want this car and NOT want the chicken? That's like saying you want a Superbird but without the wing.

I am ok with the chicken, just not that color chicken.

The chicken is not the issue for me.  It's that the yellow and this car doesn't look that great--other colors (for me) are more preferable.  Yes, if I purchased this, I would have it sprayed in another color, but keep that beige interior.  The T/A cars looked best in black and gold to me since I was awed by them as a child.

This is the perfect place to commemorate one of my all-time favourite moments in car-magazine publishing.

You may recall that the hood of the Turbo Trans-Am, back in the day, got a firebird decal that breathed extra fire because, obviously, turbocharged.

A couple of months after C/D tested one [remember print lead times?] they published a letter from a guy who wrote, "If I was that chicken, and I knew how slow I was, I'd puke too."

I recall seeing a Yellow Bird or two, but no T/As in that color (I grew up in a small town where Trans Ams were uncommonly popular in the 1970s, it seemed like every other kid owned one.)

When I graduated from college one of my classmates was all set to buy a new Blue Bird, until his friends convinced him it was a secretary's car.

Hard to argue with that.

I knew a girl in school who had a yellow Camaro of that vintage. Not a Z28 but still cool. Not many Camaros at my school, either, as we mostly drove FWD compacts.

Depending on the color palette I can get not wanting a chicken, but on this yellow? The chicken just blends so well it would look strange without it.

Yeah, you guys saying no chicken or wrong color chicken are completely off base. That color is amazing together. It catches the eye and works in a way that you don't see much on production cars. No they don't "harmonize" in the same way as a Bartok concerto doesn't. And it's better for it. So rare is the manufacturer that takes bold risks with color on their cars, don't complain when it happens, enjoy it!!

I don't mind the yellow or the chicken, but I think the chicken would look better in black.

Also, definitely not a fan of the last series bumpers.  Apparently James Garner hated them so much (he used current year cars every year in The Rockford Files) he had the previous versions front ends put on the new model cars!

I see that there are apparently a nearly infinite number of custom fire chicken decals available online.  I would probably rock this one...

Reposting what I said about this one from J.A.'s thread in the Cars for Sale section:

Resident Trans Am expert here... laugh

This is a cool one, but an acquired taste. The Sundance Yellow isn't my favorite color, but it's cool to see, since the take rate is not that high. It's essentially a base Trans Am hardtop with a few options:

-Deluxe Camel Tan vinyl interior
-Olds 403/TH350 drivetrain
-A/C
-Power Windows

It doesn't have the snowflake alloys, so it instead has the 15x7 steel Pontiac Rally II's, and that means it's a disc/drum non-WS6 car, so it doesn't have the upgraded steering box, sway bars, springs, and body bracing. It does look incredibly clean, and mostly original, especially under the hood. Someone cut the dash for a DIN radio, which is regrettable but very common. I think the red bird would go better with a red interior instead of the tan, but that's just me. Otherwise, this is a clean example. I'd love to see the build sheet!

I like the '79-'81 front end, but I don't much care for the pale yellow. I'd rather have it in Nocturne Blue with either the Gold or Argent hood bird. Pontiac did have a recommended list of paint color/hood bird combos, but if you checked option D60, you could pick whatever combo you wanted, taste be damned. I've seen an Atlantis Blue car factory ordered with the orange hood bird which was, uh, unusual.

In reply to NickD :

At that point its kind of just the flex of "I have a color combo that is totally unique." Plus, As we all know its normally those odd or rare color combos that end up increasing the value years down the road.

I am kind of at a loss on the "special-ordered" color on this one.  You could get a 79 in eleven colors, but only 9 of them on a Trans Am.   This is one of those 9 colors, and the decals are in the "standard" color for that exterior color (ie not D60 override).   So I'm not sure how that is any more special-order than any other 79 Trans Am in any other color combo.   Anyhow, not to nit-pick but it also has the wrong shaker call-out (403 should say "6.6 Litre") and an 81 fuel door.

For your viewing pleasure, here are some D60 override  79's (non-recommended decal colors for the body color):
