As it's been said, you gotta try them out for yourself. I like standards. I dislike the wind protection options on them. I rode my 690 duke for 7 hours last Saturday. Was a bit sore for a few days but it wasn't my back that was bugging me.
My Dad's Goldwing I've ridden for 10 hours straight and would happily jump back on for another stint.
L4 L5 diskectomy. bulging disk in my upper back. 5-10, 270. 31" inseam.
Can't ride supersports anymore, at least without bar risers.

The best wind protection I've experienced is on my BMW R80RT.
That fairing keeps you dryer than even my GL1100 fairing did.

As a serial BMW touring bike owner, the only bike that IME tops the R80/R100RT for weather protection is the K1100LT.

I demo'd a few bikes today at an event this morning in Lakeland. The Tiger 900 GT Pro is now very high on the want list. Only rode it for 30 minutes, but I was able to flat foot it with ease with the seat in the low position. smooth, very good wind protection for being such a small screen. (Visor was up for 90% of the ride.) Plenty of leg room, and the cruise control.... 3rd gear roll on from 25 to lose your license speeds was impressive.

I love my Tiger 800. The newer model fixes many of the annoyances with the one I have.
Yup, comfortable spells adventure style bike. If you want it only for pavement, maybe check out a Kawasaki Versys.
Without question the v Strom 650 fit me like it was designed specifically for me. I went another direction because the engine was lacking in character but that bike was special in how it fit my 6' frame.
I see a lot of folks touring on "adventure" bikes... the closest I have owned was a 97 F650 thumper. I can attest to it being an extremely bad fit for me.
I have heard good things about the Vstrom, although never ridden one.
The most comfortable bike I have personally ridden, is the BMW K75. But considering my chopper / bobber former life, that's not a huge surprise
I did test ride a K1100LT; for that short ride, it was mighty comfortable! And am lowering the price on my 87 K75S, to buy it... not due to comfort, but by being old and tired enough to want to hide behind that fairing for the upcoming winter commute!

I have not ridden one, or any gold wings. I have sat astride both, and hated the feel of that fat wide 'wing. The Kawi'. did not feel bad. "The newer 'wings are supposed to be much better feeling/handling than the 80s / 90s were
