Let it drain and degas, sanded and laied it on the side.
Fun story it was laying on its side drying and the neighbor girl knocked on my door to tell me the motorcycle is taking a nap.
Scored a nice tank off marketplace so decided to patch this one up and keep riding.
Eastwood makes a good tank sealer, looks like melted vanilla ice cream but works well. Then the patch can be smoothed without fear of leaks.
In reply to 914Driver :
I almost went that route, but got a nicer tank and this was in my tool box.
New seat cover, and turn signals since oem signals where in terrible shape. got a clutch shaft leak I need to attend to before riding anymore.
Almost smashed a stinky kitty last ride.
Just over 1200 miles on it, rode it today and got caught in the rain.
Also added a bike bell
So clutch slipped quite badly at over half throttle. So tried adjusting clutch and giving it some heat with no avail. Ordered friction disk and side cover gasket and had some new springs in my pile. Soaked the new disk and tore in.
Needless to say that clutch was cooked. Soft clutch springs, worn out friction disk and rusty steel's.
New springs
new friction disk in basket
Cleaned the steels with a wire wheel and brake cleaned and reassemble with new parts.
Test rode and new clutch doesn't think of slipping and clutch lever feels much smoother
wow, I've never seen steels rusted like that. Wild.

Neither have I, I wanna say setting for 26 years did it to them.
Found some stock drz mirrors in my box o parts looking for valve shims.
They don't look bad at all.
Also eyeing making this thing.
Foot pegs where a no bueno on the easy scale. Need to grab more parts to make it work.
Did a thing with the cluster.
Before
New to me
Ol girl is getting the miles put on. Commuting in Columbus to work.
Offset headlight finally drove my nuts enough to take care of it.
Some homemade brackets and a led light and atleast it's centered now.
Was slowing down for a light and almost got launched over the bars by the rear brake lever.
Bolt in yellow sheered (found head) and all chaos ensued.
Wheel spins free currently. $35 in parts and we should be back in business.
EBAY was my friend when that happened earlier this year. I ordered the bolt new, but I needed the rod. 25 bucks got me the rod, the stay and the bolt. Good thing, the bolt took 2.5 months to get here
In reply to Mr. Lee :
I grabbed everything I need to fix it ,should be here by the end of the week.
Rode the Yamaha round over the weekend, in the right foot peg disintegrated, thankfully someone local had some in stock.
Good as new
The left side old and new.
Bonus picture
Played with the Yamaha brakes today. Works better than ever.
Had to cut brake cam off
All together now and better than ever.
Let a friend borrow it for a day, they said "rides quite nice for how trashed it looks" not sure if that's a complement or not.
Been the good ol commuter.
Even tho it's the bird killer. 2 this week.
Haha, this thing is a menace to the local wildlife.
In reply to thatsnowinnebago :
2 birds and a squirrel on drz and 3 birds and a person on the xs400.
Clutch lever perch has always moved on the bars some, loosened it up and moved it so I could clean under the bars. Put it back and started to tighten the bolt and it decided to become a multiple piece unit. Had to break out a screw driver to finish getting it off.
Had a random perch and a aftermarket Dr/drz lever laying around so combined them and works like a charm.
It was bothering me the clutch and brake lever didn't match so a little bit of rooting around found one for the brake lever also.
Next time I have some slow time at work need to strip them.
120 miles today, still need to find some cheap dirt bars. Plus side been playing with some new parts so got a review incoming.
Well. Let's see if this helps with some comfort issues I have been having.
Tore down and cleaned up.
Bar comparison
Mostly installed, need to adjust cables and lines some, and check lever and bar adjustment and wire grips on.
Note: used a slightly modified R6 motion pro throttle tube.
