This is not your buddies K5 rusty Blazer anymore.
Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport Enterprise.
2023 Chevrolet Blazer AWD, 24,000 miles, driven hard, base 2 liter turbo engine.
Feels cheap, these are priced in the upper $30's to upper 40's? Doors feel tinny - lots of plastic. I can state I hate 2.0 liter turbo engines with 8/9 speed transmissions! Also it feels like the same Equinox, Murano, CRV......they all seem identical.
Not really blown away. No purchase from the big guy.

Ah, the bride and I are thinking of getting a trailblazer as they are flat towable. (We got a motorhome)
Cheers
Also this car is rough - there's a cigarette burn about 3/8" deep into the seat. This isn't an ash or small ember. These are odd scratches on the windshield too.
99% of rental cars are beaters these days.
THis year so far I have gotten
- Lots of Kias that smell like dope
- A 300 that smelled LOT like dope
- An obviously used Dodge Ram that came from a lease return (had holes drilled for a toolbox, stickers, and window tint)
- A pretty decent soft top Gladiator (but all the USB ports were broken and Android Auto isnt wireless)
- A Polestar 1 with some BADLY curbed wheels (OK, this was pretty cool, I regret nothing. One of like 400 in the US)
- An Explorer ST that needed tires aired up daily
Oddly enough the nicest ones have been in Mexico. At least they are clean

As a staunch manuals-only guy, I will still say this in slight defense of rental automatics - most (all?) modern automatics use learning algorithms that try to adapt to the driver. This is very bad for rental fleets because who knows what kind of no-mans-land it has adapted to. I have no idea how long you'd have to drive a rental for it to adapt to you though, so if it still sucked at the end of a week of driving, that's probably not the adaptations' fault. But still, it could be because that's a small percentage of total miles driven. No idea...
Enterprise gives you a large Clorox wipe for extra protection after their "extensive" cleaning.
By the dried booger or spit (not sure) on the steering wheel center I kinda feel they do minimum cleaning allowing you to do it.
I had a 2wd frontier recently. The refreshed one. Yes it was old and trucky, but I liked it a lot. Would buy.
beyond that my experience is similar to you. Busted old cars.

Putting most rental cars in sport mode or turning off traction control helps a lot.

A Polestar 1? Yeah that's totally rad.
I figured the only way anyone would get a chance to drive something like that would be to use Turo.

I think it's folly judging a vehicle's worth by a rentals behaviour. Some of the worst cars I've ever driven have been rental versions of otherwise pretty decent cars.

This.
An abused car ended up being a peice of crap. Who knew?

Hertz rents them in Cali. I think they have two in their fleet, I picked up in San Diego.
Was walking out and looked at a row of Mustangs including the GT500H or whatever they call it, a few Mercedes, and a Polestar 1. I mean - come on - when are you gonna get to drive a Polestar 1 for a week around San Diego.
I think about that car almost daily. It was very very special. Interesting mix of looking like nothing else and everything else at the same time.
