Found the holset for it, but don't feel like rebuilding it and the guy wants too much. Also, can I even FIT a Solara trans into a challenge budget?

Keep scouring the junkyards. I've seen them on car-part.com for $400 from time to time. I paid $700 for mine, but it has less than 20k miles.
You could also adapt an SW20 MR2 Turbo trans, the earlier ones are usually cheaper. The synchros aren't as good in those, but they're just as strong as the other variants.
Although honestly... with a big turbo like that, the stock gearbox should be fine. The gearboxes shred from a HUGE sudden onset of torque. The HX40 won't give you that.
With my "medium-sized" turbo, if i added nitrous, i would need an E153 trans.
