This video is pretty helpful. It's raw audio from ATC and NORAD only, no conspiracy theory or anti-consipracy theory, just the facts as they happened. It's unnerving and it got dusty here a few times while I was listening this morning.

Had a friend on Flt 93.   I wonder how many people we have a passing or nodding acquaintance with that we just don’t see anymore, and never know where they went.

Does that make sense?

I was in college, remember that morning with crystal clear quality.

It was strange that it was such a beautiful day in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and such a tragic day for our country.

I knew two on flight 93 and a NYC fireman who were lost that day. All 3 would have been right at home on this forum.

As a pilot who still always looks up, I remember, vividly,  looking up that day, and the days afterwards...and seeing nothing. Not a single plane in the sky.  N-O-T-H-I-N-G.

That's when it realy sunk in.

I was still in high school. I remember the feeling of the country afterwards. I remember the fear in everyone’s day to day speech. I remember the friends that had to go to therapy to find some way to deal with this. I even remember the type music that came out afterwards was very somber. I still can’t listen to “Blurry” by puddle of mud. It changed everything in the world. It flushed the toilet we all live in

They say this is a “post truth era”. It stemmed from this event.

I was in London England planning on flying home the next day ,

Report on BBC radio about the first plane , I went over to an Electronics store nearby and the 2nd plane had already hit ,

being from the West Coast I wondered how many more places were going to get hit ,

Best thing they did was close down all flights, we will never know how many that saved ,

I was able to fly back home on Saturday to almost empty Airports with Machine Gun carrying Security,

RIP to all that died that day and later because of it.....

My sister was walking to class at a Manhattan college when she saw a very low flying plane pass overhead.  Her professor told everyone what had happened and she went outside to chaos in the streets.  She’ll never forget and I won’t either.

Lots of memes on FB today urging us to be "9/12 people".  United and seeing past external differences.  That's still possible.  And really it's just a personal daily choice.

I have a songbook given to me by my grandmother from her mother's collection.  Not a church songbook, but a community songbook.  Songs people sang together, a capella, when they gathered for civic events.  Just a few times in the weeks after 9/11, a much larger percentage of Americans rediscovered the importance of a united America.  Some were even prone to host civic events where patriotic music was proudly sung by all.  Just sung.

Think of the events/people/causes that are important enough for groups of adults to sing to one another without accompaniment.  Those reasons to sing are always there.  Today is a perfect chance to remember.  We just have to choose to remember and to sing

I have never shared this with anyone as I really had not thought about it but your comment reminded me of this:

This was I think either 9/12 or 9/13 2001.  I was with a group of "officials" at a not so public government facility.  We were on the roof assessing things and had been commenting on the complete lack of aircraft as we were up on the roof.  We were then told via radio to stand down as something friendly was going to be coming in low and hot but we were not told from where.  Almost instantly I pick up a aircraft about a mile out to our west .  So low you would think it was skimming the tree tops.  Within an instant (really 5-6 seconds maybe) it was on us and then roaring away.  It was a completely blacked out VC-25 (Bowing 747) with the engines at full song.  When I say blacked out it was black not gray like most military plains.  It was most likely heading to Logan but the need to know was in full effect at the time so i never got any more info on who or what that was all about.  It was so low that I felt the heat blast from the jets.  You don't have any choice but to duck.  On of many memories I have of that time.

We just brought my son (first born) home from the hospital the night before.  My dad was working in the basement at our home and came and got us up just in time to see the 2nd plane hit.  Like everyone else, I was angry and scared.  What really impacted me, however, was thinking "what kind of world have I brought a child into?"  I feel like I still haven't recovered my sense of basic optimism.

My daughter was born 9/8.  I had many of the same thoughts.

I am sometimes really sad as two of my kids never will know life pre 9/11.   It is not a describable thing other than we that lived it know that something was taken from us.  Something good.  Something we did not realize we had until it was taken.

Getting even is something that I have thought long and hard about and as time has passed I realized that I don't want to get even.  What I want is my Pre 9/11 life back.  I think that would be what some would call being made whole again.  This is also why getting even (or really it should be called being made whole again) is not really possible as we can never get pre 9/11 life back.  This really sucks and makes me so mad sometimes.  I have no way to share with my kids what we had growing up pre 9/11.

I've never listened to this before, even though I've entertained all the conspiracy theories and there still is one supporting comment to that at the beginning of the recording.

"4 planes are hijacked on the day the US gov't is doing an exercise?" Not saying I believe it's a conspiracy, but it does raise questions. Just like Operation Northwoods and lots of other incidents.

I was listening to Sirius XM NASCAR this morning and Brad Keselowski was on.  He was talking about "where were you" - he was a high school senior.  First class that morning was Current Events.  Second class was Journalism.  Nothing like living it live.

In reply to dean1484 :

The boat lift story is an amazing one.  The sailors working in the harbor and rivers in NYC rarely get any publicity for the things they do but they are the first responders to anything on or near the water.  Without them getting out of Manhattan to the west would have been almost impossible.

I remember it like it was yesterday but it also seems like a lifetime ago if that makes any sense. I lost three people I knew that day, and   several friends and coworkers since to related illnesses.  Like Dean I’d love to go back to my life and world pre 9/11 as it has touched so many aspects of what goes on now for so many and usually not in a positive way.  As time passes it’s gotten easier to get through the day, I still have a few moments here and there but nothing like I used to. I don’t know if I’m phrasing this right but probably the most frightening part at the time was that I was still fairly young at 25 and this was the first time something happened where there was no one telling me how things were going to work out, that they’d seen things like this and we’d be ok.  Grown men I could normally depend on to have some advice just looked shellshocked and confused.

It sounds corny but in the days and months after I was proud to be here doing what I could and knowing the people I worked with both at Transit and the other government agencies were some of the finest workers you could hope to have and that we are ready for damn near anything.  I’m also very relieved that we’ve never seen anything like it again.

Unrelated but my mind is going a hundred different ways today, every time I see this picture of the dog in the basket getting ready to help I smile.  Rescue and recovery dog people came to us from all over to an absolute nightmare to help us and as a dog person it really struck me.

The real fear was a few days later. Something happened, the details are fuzzy, but there was an issue with an airliner. They scrambled a pair of F-16s out of Madison, WI. They were fully armed. They were cleared for military power. They (sonic) boomed us coming in hot to Chicago. False alarm, but seeing fully loaded Vipers streaking toward Chicago spooked the E36 M3 out of me.
