Megadeth is the emo whiner of mainstream metal. Notice that Metallica's music got way better after Mustaine's influence was surpassed/expunged.
A general rule I have is that if any song's first line starts with "I", or has "I", "me", or "my" in it, just stop the playback then as it's going to suck. Megadeth has a lot of I/me/my lyrics. Metallica generally never does, and most that do are from Ride the Lightning and earlier. (Master of Puppets gets a pass because it's written from the perspective of a concept, not a person)
How about the song I by Sabbath?
House of Sleep by Amorphis is a great song, i really need to look more into their music but usually....i like songs rather than bands.
Other stuff on my playlist that hasnt been mentioned on here:
Prehistoric Dog by Red Fang
Solitude by Candlemass
Pyramid of the Moon by Shrinebuilder
Deaths Door by Uncle Acid and The Deadbeats
Hammer of the North by Grand Magus
The Devil You Know by Of Limbo ( i had tickets to see them but they got in a horrible wreck the day before)
Remember We Die by Gemini Syndrome
Finsterforst
failed to fetch something or other, iphone6 with safari
I grew up on a strange mix of Metallica, AC/DC, Beastie Boys and Faith Hill. I have more of a metalcore, punk metal and hard rock taste but my rotation consists of.
Avenged Sevenfold, The Amity Affliction, To The Wind, Metallica, Korn, System of a Down, Slipknot, Seether, A Day To Remember, Trivium,
I've been listening to a lot of female vocalist metal bands lately. Arch Enemy has been on the play list a lot the last few weeks. A little on the lighter scale, In this Moment, The Pretty Reckless, Otep. Something about angry women I guess must do it for me. Musically.

Nice! That definite has an old school thrash vibe to it.

I don’t know if it’s your thing, but have you heard Jinjer?
Current rotation is
In Flames
Children of Bodom
Soilwork
Band-Maid (Japanese, and less metal than hard alt-rock)
Ghost (not really metal, more like classic rock with a metal look lol)
Amon Amarth
Anthrax (only John Bush albums though)
Eluvietie
Mastodon
Baroness
Puya (Puerto Rican funk-metal)
Draconian
Propagandhi (not metal, hard punk)
and I keep listening to Maiden "Blood Brothers" for some reason.

I so want to like Pretty Reckless. Her voice is enchanting and the songs are good. But her backing band is beyond lame (go watch a live vid).
I'm pretty big into the female metal scene...maybe more of the melodic stuff (though I've seen Arch Enemy, the Agonist, and ITM). On the more melodic prog-metal side - of course Nightwish,

A lifetime ago I fronted a sort-of metal band and what we lacked in talent we made up for in pretentiousness. A buddy of ours that roadied for us got into this band, and immediately we realized we sucked and they didnt. What is incredibly cool is, near on 30 years after they quit, they are getting some traction in Germany. Check em out.

And then more recently I stumbled upon a Finnish symphonic deathcore band called Omnium Gatherum and if it weren't for the cookie monster vocals ( no, I am not a fan of the death growl), I would be really, really into this. As it is I bought their latest album.

The most recent show I went to was freaking *wild*. Tennger Cavalry. Mongolian folk metal. Never heard of em but they sold out Carnegie Hall in 2015. 10/10 will see again. Sometimes "different" is "no good" , but sometimes it is. Turns out I like throat singing and metal.

The guitarist from Puya is a close friend of the guitarist from my old band in IL. They used to tour together back then. You’re the only other person I’ve heard mention them!
In reply to Jay_W :
We opened for Tennger Cavalry back in 2016 & I too bought their latest album(at that time). It’s such an odd juxtaposition of music, but it definitely works.
Have you heard The Hu? They’re somewhat similar to Tennger Calvary, yet different.

I have heard of the Hu. If Tengger Cavalry is Mongolian Metallica, the Hu is Mongolian George Thorogood. Kewlness.
Opening for those guys musta been a fantastic experience, I am jellis as hell!
I bought a record player for my wife as a Christmas gift so she could listen to some old records she got from her mom (NOT metal). Long story short, I had a hankering for some Black Sabbath for some reason and just spent too much on some new vinyle. Listening to It now. I think the purchase was worth it.

The guy who sits in the office next to mine at work (who I hired out of University of Puerto Rico several years ago), used to be a roadie for them, so that's how I know them. We actually went and saw them live here in Washington DC a couple years ago, which was pretty cool. I was probably the only non-spanish speaker there :)
Periphery, letlive., and Closure in Moscow are my top three as of late.
I haven’t heard the latest from Ghost other than the “singles.” Thank you for reminding me to pick that up!

How does she do that with her voice? That is unreal!

For me personally it was a E36 M3ty gig. Soundcheck went fine, but our first song I played the main sitar melody on bass & nothing worked - no sound at all. It suddenly kicked back on so we restarted the song & the rest of our set went fine. The crowd was pretty light & I had to leave early to drive back down to MS from IL, so I didn’t get to hear most of TC’s set. I did buy their CD though.
In a Manowar mood.
Good thing that Sabaton took it all and put it in one song.

I"ve seen them live 3 times - still one of the best live bands out there, even if they are totally cheesy. Everyone who goes with me to their shows always says its one of the most fun shows they've been to.
In reply to irish44j :
Sabaton, or Manowar? I'd classify both as cheesy to be honest.
There's a semi-official Youtube channel now called Sabaton History, where they put up videos about the real-life historical events behind some of their music. There was a guy a while back who did historical videos and did three or four that had titles eerily similar to the Sabaton songs that they were about, and I wonder if they got him to do them for this new channel. Haven't watched any yet but they keep getting recommended at me.
