Yesterday, my SO and I went for a drive through the country. Nice two lane roads through great scenery. Came into a small town, and there sits a "diner", the old fashioned kind.

Stopped for lunch. the diner was being operated by one middle aged lady. Waitress, cook, cashier and she probably washed dishes too.

Enjoyable lunch . enjoyable drive.

Nice!!

There used to be a place just two blocks from my office that was mostly an old train car but was disguised by having some concrete block structure around it. One man, one old lady, guy cooked, lady took the orders. It was super cheap for anywhere, let alone right at the edge of downtown. $2 burgers and the like. Sadly someone finally snatched up the land underneath it and built some fancy new building. I hope the people that owned the restaurant made out okay in the deal, their land was worth a fortune.

(some land down the street, like literally 200 yards away, sold for $36 million a few years back, so hopefully they knew what it was worth...)

They probably don't even pull in minimum wage, but wouldn't trade it for the world.

Those are the best places to find.

About a month after my now- wife and I started dating, we went to Carowinds (a theme/ amusement park on the NC/SC border near Charlotte.) for the day. On the way home, top down in our Corvair, we decided to take the back roads, as the Corvair feels more at home on 2 lane blacktop than on the interstate. As dark fell we happened to cruise past this little cinder-block bar, and from the road I could see through the open door that it was nearly empty and had a pool table. We pulled a quick youey and went in. Ended up drinking dollar beers and shooting 3-ball at a dollar a game with the bartender and a couple of regulars until they closed the joint up. We lost more on pool than we spent on beer, and had a great time.

There is a truck stop/diner in Gilman, Illinois (K&H Truck Plaza) that has that old time feel - (me being 50 years old) there is an older waitress lady that took my order and called me "sweetie". That itself was worth it. Then you can drive back State Highway 45 back to Kankakee and hop on I57 and head north.

I found a hidden in plain sight Mexican place in the middle of a city. I'd pass the place daily but tried lunch today. I really wish I wasn't picking up because the quaint dining area and even the patio seating really welcomed me to sit down chill and enjoy the meal as much as the staff did.

Not to mention the food is some of the best Mexican I've ever had. Their $7 "burrito" was more like a soft shell taco salad you could eat with your hands.

A place I'd love to take my wife to if I didn't think she'd demand the staff to be deported for being Mexican.
