So what is they aren't making that many cars? Lambo, Ferrari, Rolls Royce, etc don't make a ton of cars and yet get a ton of press.

Tesla recently announced they are now making 500 cars a week! That's pretty impressive and seem like a lot to me (how many cars does Austin Martin make?). I suspect they will hit some sort of saturation, but for those that can afford it, it is supposed to be a very nice car. They announce their earning today, so that should be interesting.
I just watched the Top gear with the SLS Electric, also impressive. Range... not so much. But 740 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque in an electric car, oh boy! It is a weeeee bit expensive also

The Honda's the only other purpose-built EV in that group- the rest were simply modifed vehicles. (The Honda also didn't come out until a year later, and they only produced ~300 of them) While I will grant you that yes, technically you are correct, the EV1, in my mind, was more of a technological leap and gamble for GM than simply, say, sticking a pile of lead acids and a motor in a Geo Metro. Although in retrospect, perhaps that would have been a better idea...

Not the same kind of press. One gets press for fun or super luxo status cars. The other gets massive amounts of 'save the world' green press above all of that.

So what? They are making mass produced, saleable, USEABLE electric performance sedans. I just love the commentary from the cheap seats... First it's "they'll never make them, it's vaporware." Then it's "they won't work as promised, they'll just be golf carts with a pretty body." Then its "they'll never be profitable" then it's "they were only profitable because they sold green credits, but no one will buy the cars." then it's "well they don't sell as many as F150s so they are a failure." What's going to be next? What spurious reasoning will people have to denigrate them when they sell more than they predicted and are on their third product launch, making money hand over fist?
The Tesla S is selling more than the cars it directly competes with: the Mercedes S, the BMW 7 and the Audi A8. But I don't see anyone badmouthing those cars as sales failures. the Tesla S gets most of it's press from being a fast performacne sedan that has a low operating cost.

Sure, and I didn't mean to discount that GM was for electrification during the time when they were against it. Chelsea Sexton, for all her advocacy, is a product of the General. Chevy surprised me with a care package shortly after leasing my Volt that included a nice glossy coffee table book on the development of the Volt. Development took years and was built on a lot of research.

So, yeah, lots of people are buying them, and you sound like a sore loser. 
And you bet your ass the first car I buy when I hit the PowerBall tonight is a Model S.
