1990 diesel 4x4 for $4200 http://frederick.craigslist.org/cto/3445071694.html last of the breed, 99 turbo diesel 4x4 fully loaded 170k $6900 http://frederick.craigslist.org/ctd/3448265041.html same but black with lower miles and higher price (too high btw): http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/cto/3458098586.html and, here is a pretty sweet 96 ex fire truck burban, 4x4, 163k, set up for plow, http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/cto/3457940986.html The third one is really nice, black with tan leather a sweet combo, but I think he is at least 2-3k over market value on it. I, for no reason whatsoever, have a huge soft spot for ex firedept and surplus vehicles, so I think you kinda have to go with the 96 fire truck. a steal at only $4500! and ohh, that red interior! lol honestly that truck is rough, would have been work more if they would have left the lights in, all those holes are nasty looking. Plus that ghetto fab plow mount welded to a bull guard isn't adding any value.

In reply to andrave:

The early ones also suffered from completely random oil pump failures.....I personally saw 2 dead due to that. It was indeed a sad day when they did away with the 7.3L Strangely enough, in the world of pulling trucks(Haisley Machine is literally 7mi from me), even the dodge guys seem jealous of the 6.4L and 6.7L powerstrokes......

I'm aware of Centurions - there was one for sale around here a little while back - but keep in mind that I'm after an appliance and not another project. A lot of those are projects simply due to the bodywork issues that are showing up by now, even out here. Plus, the last thing I need in an appliance is parts that are hard-ish to get (like body parts for a Centurion). I just want to be able to go down to NAPAzone and pick up parts that are on the shelf. Cool vehicle otherwise.

DuctTape&Bondo wrote: Tim, I didn't see 4x4 being a requirement? A couple of older ads still showing up locally for me around the upper end of your budget, not sure if they are still avail or if you're willing to travel (or use uship)

Travel to SoCal wouldn't be that much of an issue for the right vehicle, but we pretty much need 4x4 so we can use whatever we buy as a backup DD. Especially given that my 325ix went from DD to project this morning.

I've seen at least one of them for sale in a 'burban but they seem to be fairly rare. Not overly expensive though, I guess that might have something to do with the fuel consumption.

That would violate the "no projects" rule though.

6.0's are OK if you know going in, at ANY time, you WILL need to pony up 2k in just parts to make that POS driveable again.

FICM's die, just because of where they are placed besides the 12v supply problem. Turbo's love to die after a milkshake too. Switching to the the ELC CAT coolant and adding a coolant filter should be one of your first mods. Fresh fuel filters every 10k should be a must or switch to a biggest filter dual filter AM setup you can find. Just run the latest Ford oil cooler when changing out the EGR cooler with a delete or Bostech deal.

Easy way to check for stretched head bolts is to get it warm, boost the piss out of it in 3rd or 4th and just quickly let off. If it grunts, put HG's and studs in. Most of the trucks that keep failing HG's have heads that are too warped to be machined and warrant replacement.

Doesn't violate any of my rules though....
