We bought some old brass handles for our bar project.  They were dirty but good shape.  I cleaned them but they turned out too good.  I tried a salt and vinegar mix I found online but it just turned them green and orange.

Any suggestions on how to add "clean" patina to some brass handles?

Thanks!

Blowtorch.

No, seriously, if they are solid brass and not plated zinc, you can do it with a blowtorch and also work some colors in there in the process.  I think I saw it in an Adam Savage video, but worked well on a project or two, not well on a hook that turned out to be plated zinc.

I say as long as its not plated zinc, because the zinc guts will melt out of it ruining the piece, happened on a thing I was making for my wife. Thankfully it was new hooks bought at Lowes.

Do what my mom does with her brass door handles at her house....50 years of years of opening them with lotion on her hands has them all looking 300 years old. smiley
