Found myself in another situation today where a family was deciding at the last minute to continue all advanced measures for a patient including CPR, defibrillation, intubation, etc etc. On an elderly advanced dementia patient.

Whatever, it's your right. It just really bums me out because the medical community does such a poor job educating the community on how poorly advanced life support techniques work, and the quality of life you're left with if you do happen to make it out on the other side.

So please. Find out from your elderly relatives if they have wishes regarding these things. Have a thoughtful conversation and make sure their wishes are known to all, so their last moments can be peaceful, not surrounded by the lights, alarms, and violence of a code blue if its not what they want.

I was with my Mom at the Mayo clinic 10 or 12 years ago, and they asked me about a DNR order. I phoned my brother, and he said, and I agreed, " If Mom wakes up and finds out she was dead and you stopped it, she will be seriously upset."
