I had sudden recent changes to my health where I am having difficulty breathing at home. Several people I know told me that air purifiers should work. Does anyone here use them and did it really make a difference for you? What brand works or is it all BS as to it's function? It feels like I have become asthmatic and never had it before. Nobody in my family has it except my wife. It freaking sucks and I want to fix this before it gets worse. My home was already tested for mold and there was none.

You might consider one with a HEPA filter. Basically looks like a fancy version of your HVAC air filter. We used to have one from kenmore, looked like a big box fan but was quieter.

I never found the ionizing filters to do much other than create another thing that needed cleaning in the house.

I have had one of these for a long time. Noisy but effective. These days I only use it when I'm doing a project in the house and I don't want to subject the kids to dust--used it today when I was adding insulation in the attic.

We tried one back when we had cats and I deduced that I was allergic to cats. It was a pretty good unit with a filter and some kind of electrostatic grid. It didn't help. Taking a Loratadine tablet once daily worked better. Eventually being free of cats worked the best!

i have a $300+ HEPA unit that my parents bought for us when we were trying to diagnose the cause of the baby's asthmatic symptoms. the thing is awesome, i noticed in a day that i was breathing better - i also have asthma. we have a dog and keep the house clean. most of the problem seems from being next door to a functioning corn and soybean field, so we get lots of dust and allergens if the wind isn't blowing due east.

i'll have to check the brand as i'd highly recommend it. i wouldn't ever recommend one of those ionic breeze BS generators, all they do is make money for the people selling them.

With five parrots (three of them cockatoos, which are notoriously dusty), we're pretty hard on air filters. Regardless of what claims any of them make, only one thing really matters: Surface area. Well, two things: Surface area and replacement filter availability and price. The biggest filter you can find is useless if you can't get replacement filters when you need them. Our filters in the people house last about 18 months with regular cleaning. In the bird room it's under a year.

Basically, go to a store you like (Target, Wal-Town, Lowe's, Home depot) and buy the biggest HEPA machine you can afford/fit in your room, and make sure they have plenty of replacement filters sitting on the shelf. Usually the cylinder filters will have more capacity/surface area than the tower types, but physical placement can be an issue.

Basically, the technology is pretty much all the same, you're just shopping capacity.
