Just posted on The NY Times site, Link, probably behind a paywall died at 102.

He was with the magazine for 55 years, created the fold-in in 1964.

I devoured every copy for many years. We also had a first edition, last comic book edition, and every copy from the transition to a magazine in 1962 through about 1965. My dad threw them away.

I even read the little comics in the margins. Remember those?

When you reread the magazine you looked for those.  Almost like bonus comics.

Yes, those were great.

Sort of unrelated, but I just heard the story behind Spy vs Spy on the weekend, and it's creator Antonio Prohías

Further proof that only the good die young.

I loved mad magazine.  I even enjoyed mad tv.

Godspeed, sir Al.

My dad had a friend who ran a drugstore that had the obligatory magazine rack, and every month from around 1965 to 1970 he'd give me and my brother a copy of the latest Mad magazine.  We had several of Al Jaffee's Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions books, too.

[The same guy also gave us a lot of National Lampoon magazines...I can only assume neither he or my dad ever looked through them very carefully and figured they were about the same as Mad,  but in those days the Lampoon had some pretty risque material.  As young teen boys, we didn't let on there was any difference. wink]

I used to devour Mad Magazine whenever and wherever I could find it. Rest in peace, Mr. Jaffee. Here's hoping you are reunited with many members of the the usual gang of idiots in the afterlife.

Al Jaffee's MAD Inventions was my favorite book in 3rd grade. Easily read it 50 times.

I just saw the news. I also grew up on his stuff. Somewhere I have a few of his Snappy Answers collections.

Man, that is practically what I read first, so I wouldn't get distracted later.  Those were the best
