Did you think they were Mexican too?

Laughing so hard I almost pissed my self. (Not in a mean way, OP. It takes a real man to let others have a good laugh at his expense now and then...which is why I randomly pull my pants down in front of large groups. Keeps you humble. )

I could see how someone would think they were Australian, but I have always known they were Japanese ever since I saw my dad's friend's 360 Van when I was a kid. I remember asking "Who needs a van that small?"

"The Japs" is what he replied.

For some reason I never even considered that possibility.

You will warn those of us that consider you to be a friend...won't you...please...

I'm reasonably certain I can find somewhere else I'm needed. Maybe California. That should be safe.

I used to believe the same thing bc of Crocodile Dundee, the commercials in the desert , the name Outback, etc. I was pre-teen at this time though.

Yep, same here. Until age 8 or so I thought they were australian.

I always knew they were Japanese but just thought they heavily marketed for Australia and for people in the states that like Australia. I remember the Crocodile Dundee commercials from the 90s.

I got your back on this one.

Was working for Subaru at the DC Auto Show a couple weeks ago, and had an older gentleman make that same comment. After I clarified, he went on to offer that it was probably due to the Outback model name.

I'd never made that connection, but you're not alone.

A TON of americans did for a long time, due to the crocodile dundee commercials and the outback. Seriously.

Oh, and in the WRC, Chris Atkinson raced with them forever, which didn't help either, especially if you knew about the WRC when younger.

That's funny, I remember watching the Crocodile Dundee commercials and thinking "Gee...I didn't know he was Japanese."

Maybe it's an age thing. I knew they were Japanese long before Croc Dundee.

that was the point of my post early on .. I knew about Subaru's back in the '70's ... a bit before the Croc came on the scene

Those of us born in the most awesome decade in the history of time grew up seeing the Croc commercials hence the assumption they were Australian. The original Gran Turismo cleared that up for me.
