OLDSMAR - The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said it is investigating a kidnapping that ended when the victim grabbed a handgun and shoot two of his three abductors.
The kidnapping happened about 11 p.m. Sunday at Aday Motel, 501 Bayview Blvd., Oldsmar, Sgt. Jim Bordner said.
The trio apparently thought the victim could lead them to another man regarding a dispute over stolen coins, and they forced the victim at gunpoint into their white 2000 Chevrolet Malibu, Bordner said.
Detectives said this is what happened next:
A man in the back seat next to the victim laid his handgun in his lap while he typed a text message. The victim grabbed the gun and shot that person, then shot one of the people in the front seat. He then held the gun to the driver's head and ordered him to stop the car. He then got out and called 911.
The uninjured kidnapper drove to a McDonald's at 4085 Tampa Road. Restaurant employees saw the wounded people in the car and called 911. Deputies responded and found the man in the back seat was dead. The wounded person in the front seat was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa.
Detectives are interviewing the driver. The names of the abductors and victim have not been released. Charges against the kidnappers are pending.
If there are three kidnappers, why is one guy doing the guarding and the texting?
Hmmm, something smells funny about the whole story.

You would think, but it's in Florida. Kidnapping is probably even harder than voting
I just saw something on the local Austin news. A man broke into a house and took a spice rack. The house dwellers awoke to find the intruder rubbing spices on their bodies, then he threatened them with a sausage. I can't make this stuff up.
I'm trying to find a link...

So...
I wake up at 5:45 in the morning the other day to hear the police on a megaphone/PA requesting the surrender of a guy holed-up in a house on the block behind me (and adjacent to a vacan't lot I own). Here's the story: http://columbiatribune.com/2008/aug/20080817news005.asp
Incidentally, this is allegedly the same guy that fired shots at a moving car while I was with my kids on the same street a few months back.
How'd he get caught? Hankerin' for some "fourth meal" with a handgun in his lap in the drive-through and an apparently-bound passenger/hostage in the car with him.
There simply is no accounting for the judgement of criminals.
