This one was actually made with Chevy as a way to promote the Sonic. While not as awesome as their previous efforts, it's still pretty damn cool.

Saw this yesterday. The logistics and scope of it are just BAFFLING.
I'll have to hear the song in its "normal" recorded state, but I will say, the 4-part harmonies at the end are pretty sweet, considering they're doing them mid-hoon.

Then you're arbitrarily shutting yourself off from a huge portion of creative material being produced. Some of film's most gifted directors got their start in commercials, and many still work in that medium along with their film careers. David Fincher? Mark Pellington? Erroll-effing-Morris? Okay, also McG, but you can't win them all.
Also, what constitutes "selling out?" I mean, technically, if you've actually heard of a band, they've sold out to someone.
Personally, I support good work, whatever the media. I especially support good work done in a media not traditionally associated with "art."

What pisses me off is when i hear awesome songs i like in movies... then found out that they're uncopywrited unsigned people stuck doing songs just for movies and you can't find them anywhere.
Example: "Savoy Girl" by P.O.E.
I WISH he/they/whatever would sell out.

I can't fathom how much it cost to make art like that a reality. How many frackin' guitars and pianos did they use for that? Can't have been cheap! They came up with the fantastically radical idea, Chevrolet just footed the bill.
Honestly, I can't wait to see how they outdo themselves with the next video.
Really neat idea. My on niggles with this video, I have a sneaking suspicion Ok Go didn't do all the driving. Not that it really matters. Also, I was hoping they would keep using the car to make the music. Still good stuff.

Also worth mentioning are such sellouts as David Lynch (Sony), Wes Anderson (American Express), Ridley Scott (Apple's famous 1984 ad), his brother Tony Scott (BMW's long form Beat the Devil—by the way, those BMW films should be mentioned in a special category all their own), Terry Gilliam (Nike), Michael Mann (Mercedes) and Michael Gondry (Smirnoff).

That was pretty cool. The beginning, where the nails are tinkling the metal 'tags' on the bumper: now THAT was inventive.
It may be cool, I'm sure it is. I just don't like somebody foisting their message onto me. If the brand/product is integral to the message, so be it. But commercialism is one of my pet peeves, so I resist any time I can. For every entertaining commercial I've seen, I've had to suffer through 10,000 (yes, I've kept track, that's the ratio) E36M3 commercials all in the name of someone trying to sell me something I don't want/need.
You all like it, that's cool. I'm sure it's creative and neat but my life will go on without seeing another commercial for a crap-box car I have no interest in buying.
All that being said, is this pushing or selling the Sonic, or is it a cool video that has a sonic in it?
Maynard James Keenan said: All you know about me is what I've sold you, Dumb berkeley. I sold out long before you ever heard my name. I sold my soul to make a record, Dip E36 M3, And you bought one. All you read and Wear or see and Hear on TV Is a product Begging for your Fatass dirty Dollar So ... Shut up and Buy my new record Send more money berkeley you, buddy.
^^That's why I try to avoid commercialism as much as I can. That's what Chevy sais to you when it pays to have it's car featured in a vid.
After reading more about the effort, I found out it was actually filmed to be a Super Bowl spot. Which it was, but it was included with the montage of all the Sonic's "Firsts" and was kinda overshadowed by the Rob Dyrdek Sonic "kickflip" (which was real BTW and awesome).
Also, if anybody wants this song they can download the studio version for free from the Sonic site.

I'm not going to wade into the whole sellout argument. All I know is that if giving Tom Brady a hand whammy at halftime meant a lifetime of financial security for my family, I'd probably do it.

Isn't that kind of what music is about?
Oh, as far as selling out, I hope you aren't a Beatles fan. They did jjingles and such now and then, as well as making bajillions of Pounds Sterling on recording deals. I'd say that made them pretty commercial.

Yup, that's what music is all about.......NOT. Music is (or used to be) all about self-expression. NOT trying to sell me a computer, shoes, or tampons. And, while not a Beatles fan, I'm aware of the sellingn out and I'd flip the station if one of those came on.
I'm not knocking the video in question, I'm mearly saying I choose to avoid commercialism as much as I can. I see the movie Idiocracy coming true in my lifetime and I'd like to be the guy that still knows not to water the crops with Gatoraid.
To my surprise, I just opened my new Car and Driver today and they have a whole article about the making of that video.
The band was in the car the whole time and it took several takes to get one run that nothing on the outside of the car broke off.
If anyone gets or picks up an issue, check out the article, it's pretty cool.
