Then you're arbitrarily shutting yourself off from a huge portion of creative material being produced. Some of film's most gifted directors got their start in commercials, and many still work in that medium along with their film careers. David Fincher? Mark Pellington? Erroll-effing-Morris? Okay, also McG, but you can't win them all. Also, what constitutes "selling out?" I mean, technically, if you've actually heard of a band, they've sold out to someone. Personally, I support good work, whatever the media. I especially support good work done in a media not traditionally associated with "art." jg

Well-said.

"Sellout" was a term that might have had more validity back in the early-to-mid-90's, when there was a record business. Now, I don't care what a band does to make a buck.

If OK Go uses Chevy to get their art out there, good for them and good for Chevy for funding it. Everyone wins. OK Go doesn't have day jobs--they win.

It's a very different climate out there now. Very hard to make music that gets noticed. Viral is the best way to go these days (see also Walk Of The Earth's cover of "Somebody I Used To Know" that's passed 50 million views on youtube).

From what I've read that video cost upwards of one million dollars to produce. They needed a car to do it one way or the other so if Chevy is willing to pony up with a car and money to fund the video then have at it. It wasn't a blatant commercial and even if it was, meh, I base it on the merit of the creativity and creative it was. Not much to get your panties in a wad about to be honest.

To the poster questioning it was the actual band member doing the driving, apparently he took professional rally driving courses to prepare for the video and all the driving was actually done by him.

I don't feel I'm missing anything. If someone has talent in an area that interest me, they'll come across my radar. I'd rather not be barraged with shameless marketing if at all possible.
And my panties aren't in a wad, never were. I just avoid marketing as much as I can, that's all. Is that soo hard to understand? It's like I told a tele-marketer once "if you product really is THAT good, I'll find out about it and buy it. Thanks though."
That's all.

Props to him. How cool.

Easier said than done in this music biz.

I can't fathom how much it cost to make art like that a reality. How many frackin' guitars and pianos did they use for that?

288 guitars, 55 pianos, and 1,157 homemade instruments
