I've got a basic Seiko 5 that is about three years old. The rotor became loose and a jeweler told me to take the case back off and tighten the screw. Yesterday I tightened it down put the case back on and all seemed well.

I took the watch off around 8 to go to bed and this morning it was stopped at around 10:30. I have it a few shakes and nothing. I can see the rotor and associated gears turning, but the balance wheel won't get moving. If I give it a nudge it immediately comes to a stop.

The watch only cost $60 so it is not worth paying to have it fixed, but I am more than happy to give it a college try on fixing it myself. Any experts who have some pointers or common fixes? Thanks in advance.

And apparently thumping it on my hand while shaking it kick started this watch.

after, "did you turn it off and then back on ? " ... isn't thumbing it the next step in troubleshooting any problem ?

My next step was a bigger hammer, so I'm glad it started working.
