I'm a little over half way through, GREAT book. Must-read for any Top Gear fan.

He killed Santa Claus to make a quick buck.
The original Stig was Perry McCarthy - his book "Flat Out, Flat Broke - Formula 1 the Hard Way" is also worth a read.

That's the best summary I've ever seen. It applies to Perry, too.
So? Why shouldn't he get to be a personality too, if that's what he wants? It's not like Top Gear has been some perfect automotive heaven in the more recent seasons, that he destroyed utterly on a whim. Much as I love it, the show and the hosts are getting tired. Why is he the Great Satan for wanting to change his involvement with it?
The way he put it, he was not getting any recognition, and he felt "replaceable". I have felt that way about many jobs, and it eventually forced me to leave. The BBC engineered in some replace-ability so they wouldn't have to pay a big name driver.

Not saying you are defending his feelings, but: HE WAS HIRED TO BE AN ANONYMOUS CHARACTER THAT COULD EASILY BE SWAPPED OR REPLACED! I'm pretty sure he has no right to be whiny about that.

Agreed. I don't have anything against the guys, but at the same time, I don't have a problem with the show firing them for outing themselves.
Personally, I don't think the Stig should be one single driver but rather a driver pulled for a pool of drivers so the one with skills best suited for the car being tested can put in the best lap possible or even the factory's own test-driver if they want to.

I disagree. I like the idea of the same highly skilled person at the same track in different cars. Though his driving style/experience may indeed favor one type of car over another (and his times bested by someone more skilled in that particular type of car), this method removes the most variables for an apples to apples comparison of the cars
So easy to find

Apples to apples? What about weather? The lap time board is nearly meaningless when cars hit the track during different times of day, different seasons and when the track is wet. Are the times for a car run while winter snow is falling remotely comparable to a car run on a sunny summer afternoon?
