Been checking these out, I have a lifelong background in motorcycles and hope that these are entertaining enough and simultaneously can sneak around places a dirtbike could never go without the constabulary being involved. (Faux pedals are an option lol).

I know next to nothing about motorcycles, but I have lately had an interest in studio/flash photography, and a pro photographer with a useful blog about this sort of thing is also really into Sur Ron bikes:

https://sur-ron.markkitaoka.com/

I think he actually ended up shooting photos for them formally at some point, so you may conclude he's a bit biased. But his reviews of photo lighting gear that I've read are fair, and when something ends up sucking after getting a bunch of experience with it, or, later, the customer service is terrible, he goes back and edits his blog posts to say, "I take it back -- I thought it was a great product, but something happened and now I think it sucks" or "The service was so bad I'll never buy anything from them again." So his Sur Ron site might be pretty great?? Worth a click anyway.

I want one. I don't have a good reason other than they're very cool, but I want one :)

They're a bit of an odd duck, though. Not legal for use on CO roads unless you kit them out like a full motorcycle. I don't know how involved that would be, but they're too powerful to be a bicycle. They're not welcome on the mountain bike trails right by my house. So other than being stealthy, they're a lot more dirt bike than mountain bike despite their looks.

What does a rig like that cost?

In mass my understanding is that they are street legal as long as they're in eco mode. 20 of the 26 bikes I saw on tge bike trail yesterday were ebikes (powered ). I dont think anyone would bitch unless you were being a maniac.

For those wondering, they do about 50mph stock. Modded ones are almost 100 mph now (yikes).

They're legal in CO as bikes as long as you don't disconnect the limiter wire. Which, of course, you will do immediately. Maybe that's eco mode.

The mountain bike trails around here are classic singletrack, and dirt bikes (ICE or E) dig them up so they are very much not welcome. Even the assist e-bikes (they just amplify your pedal torque) are frowned upon, but then again some of the guys around here also frown on "gears". I know people use them on the paved trails all the time and I have no problem with that.

Friend of mine has one of these as a get around off road bike - mainly beach and foreshore.
He got it to replace his Honda TL125 trials bike cos it was lighter,  didn't need starting and the low noise bit. He's bought it to a couple of trials to hang out with his mates and zooms around and plays in the sections. I had a short ride and quite liked it but I didn't think it was a particularly competent off road bike, even compared to my 45 year old TY Yamaha, it made a decent fist of riding some of our sections... In non-eco mode the throttle is very, very aggressive and it wheel spins like crazy so probably quite hard on soft terrain. Surprisingly noisy as well :(

Oh man I didn't know these existed. I've been eying electric dirt bikes for a while now. The range is a little short and I'm more than a little broke, but just the fact that it exists in this price range is exciting. Give me 50 miles with full power and I'd start saving pennies now.

I wouldn't worry about legality.

The cops around here don't do anything about the crackheads riding their two-stroke powered liquor bicycles, they shouldn't bother anyone on something far less janky.

There is a light kit available aftermarket for the Sur Ron, plus a guide on how to register them.

The aftermarket is pretty good for these, 19" front wheel, larger battery, bigger controller etc.  Apparently with upgrades you can get them to go very quickly, like close to 70 MPH.

I'd love one, I just can't justify the expense until after I get a pickup.

Lunacycle is the official dealer for Sur-Ron in America, so you should definitely ask them questions. Like most are saying here, Sur-Ron are basically EV dirtbikes, not bicycles since they lack any pedal system driving the wheel- which can (not very often, but can) land you in some trouble depending on jurisdiction and where you're caught. My old midwest state would consider this a motorcycle since it lacks any leg connection to the rear wheel, for instance- but add leg power and suddenly it's a bike despite the 8HP motor driving the wheels too cool.

Everything I've heard implies they're pretty great until you can either make an Ebike yourself or unless you're looking for some unique options- tons of competitors now have batteries that can be removed and carried like a suitcase for instance. Try riding one and see.

FYI, I think the new Segway e-bike is basically a slightly modified Sur-Ron.

I had never heard of Sur-Ron until this thread, and now I'm really intrigued.

And I'm also curious about the Segway version. I inherited a pair of early Segways from my Dad, and they were surprisingly good/fun.

I don't need an eDirtbike for anything, but I've always wanted to get another small Honda dual purpose bike. This would probably scratch that itch for me.

Here's a pretty interesting review of the Sgeway X260. Five grand though...
