See, unlike the purple in Connections, I liked this because it was obscure without being just random. Did reeeeealy need that first hit, though.

I more meant the layout of it than the actual word. All this time they've been having us think around corners and then...
Ok. What the BERK was today's hint about? Of the 8 words 6 of them perfectly fit. B word? D word? What the hell do those have to do with what the hint was?
Someone smokin something at NYT.
In reply to Marjorie Suddard :
B word has to do with Francis from the 1600s and a cipher he made.
Who the hell knows that!?!?

B word was the only one that confused me. Somehow D word made total sense. I've learned that the clue rarely has anything to do with the puzzle.
Ugh, got the first 4 quickly, thought I would run this one easily. Then I had to use 3 hints to get the rest.

Disappointed in having to use a hint since the spangram was the first word found.
I'm always disappointed when I have to use a hint. The reality of the situation is I am an idiot and the NYT is deliberately obtuse so I need them. I also probably shouldn't do the puzzle as my morning wake up.

I think you may need to separate pop culture from historic cipher by a few degrees to make the connection.
