We have a well, and septic. We do not use our water Softener any more because no matter how it was adjusted, it added salt to the water. I have been looking around and see there are  saltfree softeners on the market.

Anyone running a salt free softener?

I have no information on salt free softeners but what is your concern with softeners that use salt other than costs?

Do not like to backwash in the septic for one.

My father bought one a long time ago called a Scale Watch.

Years later when he had plumbing issues with pipes clogged by calcium he quipped, "Great product. It watches the scale form in your pipes."

Sounds like a question for Richard Trethewey of “ Ask This Old House”.

You could instead backwash to a holding tank and use that for general purpose irrigation. No reason that you need to treat backwash as if it were destined for septic.

You'll need to log in to post.
