And yet, cars last longer now than they ever have. Stunning.

I like to think that's more a testament to engineers building a better product faster than the operators are building better idiots.

I pay someone to change the oil on my truck occasionally because disposing oil can be a pain and because they fill all the other fluids and grease stuff (i dont have a grease gun). I've also changed oil on hundreds of cars. I've earned my ability to sit in Jiffy Lube's waiting area and eat free popcorn and drink a free Coke. Totally makes that $50 worth it.

I pay the local muffler man to change my oil because they do it for 14.95... It's cheaper than I can buy the oil and filter for. Plus I don't have to do it.

Every time I see the word "vape" I mentally put the word tentacle in front of it. It makes my world a much more interesting place to be.

I've never burnt up a tire from a home brewed alignment, and the one time I had my Nova put on a shiny new alignment rack to check my work it was almost exactly at the specs I was shooting for..

For things that require a modest bit of knowledge or experience or where safety is a concern, I don't have a problem with paying for someone else to do it for me. In many cases it's well worth it having a skilled tradesman doing something- classic example for me was when I tried repairing the a cracked drywall ceiling before selling my old house (house had settled over almost 60 years). I just could not get the tape and mudding right, so eventually needed it done ASAP and called in a pro. The guy had it done and looking like nothing had ever been done in less time than it took me to just mix up the mud.

Now when I had to have an overflow pipe re-routed on a hot water heater I had a plumber come in and do the pipe work, but used what I'd learned from the previous experience both from what I'd tried doing and from watching the pro and patched the hole in the wall myself that time.

I've seen this problem quite in person. SWMBO has a friend whose car died on the way to a party, and he called us for a ride. After he described what had happened, I told him there was a very high likelihood that the alternator had gone out and needed to be replaced- and on the ride to his place looked up what a new one from RockAuto cost. This was after my injury, so I told him that I couldn't do what I'd normally have done and just offer to replace it for him if he got the part (was a decade or so old VW, alt was right up front and easy to get to), but that I'd be happy to help show him how to do it himself. He ended up taking it to the shop and paying $600 or so to have it replaced- something like a week before he lost his job. :/

Landlord is at a wake, so he calls me. I go in and tighten the packing nut. New tenant is watching so I show him what I'm doing and how to fix it. His reply is "why are you telling me this?" My reply was because you are a guy, you drive a diesel pickup truck, and you shouldn't have to call the landlord every time the littlest thing isn't right...... Nancy. Then I let myself out.

Sorry, nope. The entire reason that I rent is so that I can pick up the phone and have the landlord fix "the littlest thing". If I wanted to work on a house, I would buy a house.

Maybe I should open up a vape shop. I would have a steady stream of customers

Just make it a good one so it puts the one on my commute out of business- hopefully that will cut down on the amount of watermelon bunghole flavored clouds I encounter every day.
