Memory foam squishy? Are you sure you have memory foam?!
Yes. It gives too much. A comforter on the carpet gives me all I want to 'give'. I feel like I'm sinking in the memory foam. My back and butt sink in and the rest of my floats - makes me feel like my legs are in the air and my arms are being pulled from the front. I've woken up on the stupid thing with my arms so far asleep I can't move them at all. One time I woke up this way laying on my face and couldn't get up.

When I got my first place, I got the world's least comfortable pull out couch bed. It was terrible. For years, I slept on the floor with just a couple of blankets. I think I got conditioned to sleeping on a very hard surface 'cause that's what I still like.
My wife likes a soft bed. So this is a problem. Well, I can't help you on the cheap part, but I will say, our sleep number bed does the job for us. And it's unlikely we'll ever need to replace it. We've had it for nearly 10 years and near as I can tell it's exactly like it was when we got it. So it may be one of those things that pays off over time. But the initial investment was pretty high as I recall. I do like it though. My sleep number is somewhere north of 70. When I did the thing in the store I ended up at 95. The guy told me I needed to mess with it 'cause nobody's sleep number is 95. Meh, I may be using it wrong, but I like it.
The sleep number things sounds like a good idea, but I don't have that kind of scratch. I am thinking a thin stiff piece of ply under my half of the foam may work OK.
I could only sleep 5 or so hours on a regular mattress w/o back pain waking me up. Tried the 2" Overstock memory foam as the first cheap solution and it worked. Going on over three years now, I've bagged up to 12-14 hrs w/ no back pain or other ills. YMMV

To capitalize on the zombie canoe, I was actually thinking about this thread this morning. There was a Groupon/Living Social/Whatever Hip Coupon Thing today for a Nature's Sleep memory foam mattress for WAY cheap. Suspiciously cheap. Anybody have information on this brand, in the event it comes up again?
We desperately need a new mattress, but new prices are hard to swallow.
No experience with Nature's Sleep, but we did just buy a new mattress (~2 weeks ago). We went to a bunch of different stores, etc. and ultimately decided that we liked a full latex mattress best. Thanks to Carguy123 helping me understand the latex foam world, I found a local mattress manufacturer who made me what I wanted. And it was literally 50% less than the local mattress store wanted for the same product.

I have always thought a foam mattress should be about $5. It is basically packing material in a nicer bag.

I don't know about the manufacturing process for memory foam, but Latex foam is quite costly to make. Of course nothing as costly as they want you to pay for it.
Regular foam doesn't last, it breaks down, but if it were cheap enough and comfortable enough I'd be down with replacing one every year.

I love a good mattress, but nothing beats a comfy canoe:

How much? Where are we talking, like the typical mattress store that hasn't been updated since 1981 with gigantic lettering all over the front that tells you what kind of sale they currently have?

$1800 vs $3600 for a king size multi-ILD 100% latex mattress.
$450 per Twin XL to go on my adjustable base = king.
$1,100 each for the gel foam version I had.
2 stage ILD done to my specs.

and where did you go for this sort of thing locally?

I found a local mattress company that could build it for me.
Carguy went to a local company named buildabed.com and got it from them.
Neither of which helps you unfortunately. But you might be able to find a local company in your neck of the woods.

dangit, now you guys have me pricing latex beds. Sleep-ez looks promising.
I just got a memory foam (not latex) mattress from a foam rubber supplier in Milwaukee. It's not fancy, just a few pieces of foam stacked together. No glue, no cover. But, it was $600. The guy sells a ton of them. Truly custom made, without the marketing hype.
I said it once. I'll say it again. Buy a locally made product from your local Original Mattress Factory. http://originalmattress.com/
Just bought two twin sets, one for each kid, over the weekend.

Only mildly cheaper than the Sleep-ez and they ship for free, no sales tax, three layers for each side that you can choose the firmness of, and free (with shipping) exchanges of layers for different firmnesses...
Was at Costco yesterday and Spring Air had their line of Latex mattresses there. Just like most others I've found, they weren't really latex.
They had 7" of "plant based" (super hard) foam and 1-3" of Latex.
Then, just to ruin the benefits of cooler sleeping of the Latex, they topped it with 1" of some unknown foam built into the mattress cover.
1988RedT2. Original Mattress is only local to you. To the rest of us it's not local. I was able to get mine made locally - to me. So did dyintorace.
And don't get sucked into the multiple layers of latex that you can stack any way you like them UNLESS you know you are getting the ILD ratings of the latex you want. You won't be comfortable unless they are densities you want. This means you still have to find someplace to try them out.
That's the cool thing about Latex, they have a standardized rating system so once you've found out what densities you like then you can order them from anywhere and you'll like it.
Most places use a 16-19 topper with a firmer core. I liked a 24 core but most places stock 30-32 for some reason. That's almost floor hard!
Now-a-days, Various models of mattresses are available. Memory foam is polyurethane with additional chemicals increasing its viscosity and density. Faster speed of recovery of a foam to its original shape after a weight is removed is sometimes claimed as an advantage by memory-foam mattress producers. Good quality memory foam mattresses distribute body weight evenly, like having billions of little springs supporting us.

And it's hotter than blue blazes. But the weight distribution thing is a factor of all foam mattresses.

I was afraid to click the link to find out, but that's what I was afraid of.

There you go talking sex again! Of course I guess it's to be expected on a thread about mattresses.

Dude, you got "sex" out of that picture? How?
I think I said this before, but IKEA has nice, cheap mattresses. I think the latex one we use was $800
