i had an aunt and uncle that did foster care... they got the troubled teenagers for a few months at a time and mostly used them for free labor, which i guess helped them turn their lives around or something?

Sounds like you guys are well prepared. Many kudos for the foster/adoption route.

Well we survived the first night! He's a cutie. 6 weeks old and born 2 months premature. Yeah, do that math. Don't know what's going on with birth mom yet and can't give details when we do. He might be here for a short time or come up for adoption. If it's the latter we already decided we'd keep him! Baby Jav is a little jealous, but doing very well.

Wow, how cool and timely.
The wife and I have been going through the process and are weeks away from being state approved to adopt/foster. Our goal is one young one between 0-3.
Here in our mid 40's it has taken a long time to come to grips with the fact we can not have our own. We too are very excited. Very exciting for you too.

Congrats.

Imagine he outcry if we could somehow subject biological parents to the scrutiny most states put adoptive parents under.

I know several people who thought this would happen with foster kids and it didn't. Good luck to you and the misses.

That would eliminate welfare as a career choice.

Congrats. We are on Foster Kid #8 right now. Well, actually, #5, for the second time. 8 year old girl. A few months back we had brothers - 3 years old and 6 months old. Seeing the baby leave was heartbreaking. You've got my prayers that this one sticks.

In related news, after completely writing off the possibility, we found out about a month ago that we're pregnant.

We were well down the adoption road ourselves, when we got pregnant. (OK, actually she got pregnant.) Seems like giving up and moving on is a great way to finally get pregnant!

Congrats! My son (who is adopted) just turned 6 months the other day. Friends of ours are fostering too. Fostering can be much tougher than a straight adoption. Both can have lots of heartbreaks before the joy comes.

Sorry, back story: We're foster parents and have been for 3+ years. We've taken in a lot of kids, but all but one of them were guaranteed to go home. We've always talked adoption. CPS called and said they had a baby that could possibly be free & clear (AKA - adoptable) and SWMBO called me. I don't know if I'm scared E36 M3less or super happy.

Regardless of how they arrive, "Scared Shirtless" is the correct emotion. Hope it works out for you.

Little guy went to the ER this morning, and then down to a specialist hospital in Portland. He should be a-ok, but may need surgery. Just a hernia, nothing life-threatening. I'm a berkeleying wreck though!

Damn! Glad to hear the little guy is going to be ok, I can't imagine the wreck you must be right now.

One question, how does a baby get a hernia? Never heard of that before.

Hey, Jav..he'll be alright. Still, I know it's nerve-wracking to see them hooked up to all that stuff. All my daughter ever had was those tubes in the ears, and I was a wreck. Although, it was kinda funny to see a 4-yr old laughing and pointing at something like a drunk college girl.

Serious question with fostering. Who pays medical? Will it be your coverage or is it state/fed?
