Not disputing that assuming it is his his car, he should be able to decorate it any way he wants.

Ferrari has nothing to say, unless it's a lease in which case yes they do retain ownership of the car, an interest in its residual value to the next bling obsessed lessee or owner and thus would have a say in its appearance.

But it does beg the question: why?

Looks like you missed a word. I'm going to assume you meant to say " I always wanted to make love to that car".... Yup, if I was Ferrari I would have sent a letter too. Or some special operatives to peel it off in the middle of the night.

If the car were leased, would that change anything?

To be clear if I did that to the car I would have told Ferrari to pound sand as well. But I don't blame Ferrari one bit for sending the letter.

Lawyer letters are cheap and aren't worth the paper they are written on. Most people don't know that, that's why it often works. There is a huge gap between asserting things in a letter and having them executed by a court.

Ferrari sent Burt Levy a letter for his chili pepper logo for Montezuma's Ferrari book. He ignored them and you can still buy his stickers with the logo.

He did.

They were upset over the Purrari logo's not the actual wrap.

Which unfortunately can be seen two ways. One they have to make all efforts to protect the trademark and copyright. Or two Italians do not understand parody.

Actually, yes. Part of a lease agreement is to maintain the vehicle's appearance, therefore has no say in the matter, modifying its appearance can be a breach of that and THE LESSEE DOES NOT OWN THE CAR.

As in: drill holes to stick a blingy wing on the back of the car, at turn in time the owner has to return it to its stock appearance less normal wear and tear. That now means the owner has to pony up for the bodywork to return it to that appearance or pay whatever the value has been decreased. Have seen that come up twice, once with poorly repaired accident damage and second time with some added on taped stripes which, after removal, were seen to have caused a change in the paint color which required paintwork to fix.

The lessee also gets dinged for incomplete maintenance, bald tires, you name it. I saw a woman go BALLISTIC over the tire and maintenance thing; she rarely if ever had the oil changed, drove the tires to the damn cords then at lease turn in started screaming 'You told me I was only supposed to put in gas and drive!'.

The only way that Ferrari had a leg to stand on... if he was making money off of the car and it's new logo.. and even then, I do not think they could say a thing about the Logo. Unless they trademarked the colour yellow and the font

Yeah, technically he's just renting it from them then. You don't mod a vehicle you don't own.

Then there is something really fishy. He can't sell it unless it belongs to him. That means Ferrari wouldn't have a leg to stand on, therefore he could have ignored the letter.

This makes me think that if someone had a lot of money to spend on epic trolling, they need to get a late model Ferrari and put a Ford 427 side oiler into it. Imagine how upset Ferrari would be over seeing the same engine that powered Ford's GT40 shoehorned into an Enzo.

If we did that then this forum wouldn't be grassroots motorsports, it would be "billionaires-with-a-sense-of-humor-motorsports." It would also be hilarious and if someone here wins the lottery it should be car project #1.
