An Easton aluminum 2516 arrow, works the same as the McD straw trick with many more rounds. If you have an archery club nearby, there are usually a few in their lost/bent arrow bin/bucket.
BTW I'm also a Project Appleseed instructor.

Woo hoo! Cool deal. I really need to get back in. I was in a position I couldn't, but I think I can swing it again.

Beware the man that's only ever owned just one gun, though.
Finally went out with the .308.
found an empty, flat range with a nice big hill as a back stop and set up. Parked the Q so I could rest on the trunk, paced 100 and set up a box with an 8" target on it. Threw a couple rocks in the box in case the wind picked up.
Loaded and aimed. I haven't shot 308 in probably ten years. Dang. First shot was high and left. Centered the rear well enough with 3 clicks and maxed the rear height adjustment but it was still high and I don't have a wrench for the front sight. Still, I found if I aimed a foot low I was able to hit the 15x15 box every shot after the first couple. Once I can get a wrench for the front sight I'd be comfortable hunting at that range without a scope but not any farther. I was able to hit the 8" target 6 times out of 20 and that was with the first three being sighting rounds. Not bad.

That was lucky 4th shot, aiming 6" below the box. Then a few later I hit one of the rocks in the box.

I can see why it'll take down deer/elk. These were Winchester gray box for deer/elk/wild boar. It'll do the job. Also it's the cheapest stuff I can find right now @$16.
Good fun. I need to put a few more boxes through and then start thinking about a scope. 100 yard is fun so 200 should be twice as fun. But I can't see that far.
TIL - Smith now makes a compact M&P .22 which is VERY similar to my concealed carry piece. I learned this because I got a sale flier dropped on my door. Can't even remember the last time that happened. It was on sale in a combo with a mini flashlight (which I needed), a SW pocket knife (which I didn't need, but you can never have too many) and extra mag and a soft carry case. It seemed like fate, so I'm now a proud owner. It means I can put my range time in shooting .22 rather than 9mm, which are currently unobtainum around here.
Might be overstating it to call it a "boom stick", but "pew pew stick", maybe.

Oh, and it's threaded for a silence, which is a rabbit hole I'm trying hard to stay out of.

Threaded for silence, cheap ammo, good hand size? Color me interested.
In reply to RevRico :
The special was $399 at Sportsman's Warehouse. There's also apparently a model that has an extended, threaded barrel which would probably open up more "universal" silence(r) options. Again, I'm trying to stay out of "tax stamp land", so I was glad they didn't have one!
FWIW, they seem to be much better reviewed than earlier S & W .22 options. One shooter claimed 10K rounds without any issues, which is pretty impressive for a .22
I believe they even used that 22 as the basis of their 380 ez too
Cool little guns really, I like my buckmark though
nice! I love shooting .22, it was what I grew up on. Rifle, though, not pistol.
So if we're sowing off new pistols too, I picked up a Taurus 856 UltraLight .38 special since I have a crap ton of .38 reloading supplies. Unloaded it's 16oz, the thing tucks away beautifully for CC. It shoots well although 158gr ammo is..uh..snappy because it's so light. I've got some 110gr JHP I'll be loading for daily carry at some point. I can tuck it ITWB kidney carry in a cheap Uncle Mike's holster and the roll of my gut completely keeps it from printing under a t-shirt. Pretty nice. I'm going to have to spend some time with it to be as accurate as I am with my Glock, the heavy wheel gun trigger pull will take some getting used to.

I have an extra box (qty:250) of Hornady Hollow Base Wadcutter bullets (148 gr) I can make you a deal on if you wand to load some old school target rounds. You get extra low recoil but still good accuracy. If you don't have experience with them, the hollow base allows them to work at extra low pressure levels.

Awesome! I'll try to go out in the morning before work and give it a try. I did buy a 12 pack of those targets and this house is lousy with diaper boxes.
In reply to matthewmcl (Forum Supporter) :
I'd be interested. Pm me a shipped price to 31005. I've got 500 semiwad and 1000 DEWC but none of the hollow base. Be an interesting comparison.
So I put about 150 rounds through it at my buddy's house. Definitely a solid pick up. The trigger, weight, balance, action, sights and grip are very similar to my carry gun. I was surprised by the practical accuracy. It's not a target pistol, but I'd be VERY happy if I can match it with my 9mm.
The only issue I've discovered is the mag release button doesn't take a lot of effort and I have fairly large hands, so on several occasions I brushed the mag release while shooting and, on a few occasions, it actually released. It's something that would concern me A LOT if I were carrying it, but it's actually not a horrible thing with a trainer pistol, as it teaches me to keep my hand position solid and to deal with unexpected stoppages. I had no stoppages or misfires unrelated to the mag release issue. Speaking of the mag, it's interesting in that it's a weird "semi double stack". By that, I mean that the bases of the first 6 or 7 cartridges end up slightly offset left and right, which keeps the individual cartridges level despite the rim around the base of the casing. It looks wrong, but it works.
And I shot for about 45 minutes for a grand total of about $10.
As an aside, my buddy has several steel "swing plates". I'm not sure I can ever go back to punching paper after shooting steel.
I've e wanted to try steel gong targets. How close were you shooting?
About 12-15 yards, not sure I'd want to be that close with anything other than a .22.
Not exactly a 'boom stick' but I just went ahead and ordered a newly released 'Benjamin' Cayden (.22cal PCP rifle with 12 shot rotary mag, and side-lever action.) Have a Meprolight M21 holographic reflex sight I will temporarily use until I get a proper scope for it later (probably a Hawke Airmax 4-12x40). Guess it's more of a 'woosh stick'... was thinking of getting a 22LR, but always wanted a good .22cal air-rifle and don't feel like going through the trouble right now of sourcing a .22LR rifle I would actually want along with more .22LR ammo. So much easier to just buy a precision air rifle right now...
My boom stick is an Savage 10FP in .308 WIN with Manners MCS-T4 stock, Precision Armament M11 muzzle brake, and Vortex Diamondback 4-16 scope... it's a 1/2 MOA capable tack driver.
So I'm showing Kazoo Jr. the new .22 next to the carry piece so I can explain to him why I bought it as a trainer and he comes up with "Sweet! Now you can dual wield." It's moments like these you know you raised them right.
Again 9 pages in all the the "Dads" missed the obvious joke:

Downrange, the right direction is downrange. How disappointing.
In reply to Wally (Forum Supporter) :
Wow. We are slipping around here.
In reply to kazoospec :
The way I figure, if we're here, we've already slipped. The real baffling part is that it took Wally 9 pages to make the joke. Usually his comedic timing is pretty immediate. Strange times.
I'm trying to talk SHMBO into the M&P 22, since it is simular to her ez... but since we paide less for the ez, no luck so far. Fortunatly we got a lot of rounds for the ez before they started making them from unobtainum. But 22 still better plan

The wife has an EZ too, I might try to sell her on a 22 version but she's pretty happy with her 1911 22
