A while back, I scored an unmolested Colt 1911 born the same year I was (1967) after a long search. The other day my neighbor told me he had an 'old' Colt Commander he was thinking about selling... I said, "oh? tell me more..."
We made a deal, and it turns out it's also a 1967 gun, and also in really nice, original condition. So, now I've got a nice set.
In reply to Rodan :
Those are gorgeous!!!! Why is it every time I am going to get a 1911 I end up coming home with something else? I own 3-4 other pistols (I don't regret getting them at all) from me going up to look at 1911s at one of my local shops. The closest I have came to owning a 1911 is my DWX.
In reply to jmabarone :
I mean ....there are single shot derringer like objects in 223 and 7.62x39, why not?
Well, the nova is gone and I got enough to get a dot, some practice rounds and still have plenty left over for reloading components.
Ended up ordering a holosun hm3x on an excellent sale, and picked up a hs403c locally. Local place was 20% off everything except holosun, but the price was good enough. I gotta say, shake-awake is the only way. When I first built the gun, I cheaped out and had some vortex with a rotary switch with no memory. Daylight shooting meant cranking the thing through 10/11 brightness settings, then back down to turn it off. It was terrible.
So so so much better now. Magnifier should land Monday.
Shot my yugo Tokarev today and forgot how much I liked the round. Kinda wish there was more out there in 7.62x25.
It was an AK kind of morning. So much fun but it is such a spray and pray rifle. This is probably the first time I have shot mine since late last summer.
Folks with flip up magnifiers, do yall prefer the down-position to be on the left or the right?
I have it on the left, my concern is spent brass hitting the thing if it's on the right. A buddy recommended I switch it around so it's a little easier to flip down if I have a need to go to "close-range" mode in a hurry.
Also, thoughts/experience with anything like an accu-wedge?
Also also, looking at lights. Any suggestions? Something on the front with easy switching or one of those pressure/grip switch systems.
In reply to barefootcyborg5000 :
Left is generally preferred for right handed shooters, so it's easier to manipulate with the support hand. The only issue is you don't want it to be blocking your left eye when it's off to the side.
IMHO, an accu-wedge is a waste of time on a 5.56 AR, unless it's a purpose built target gun or varminter.
I personally like the Streamlight Protac HL-X rail mount with a tape switch and Cloud Defense switch mount. With the switch mounted at 12 o'clock it's easily activated by either hand, and it's naturally placed for a 'C clamp' grip. I've used a LOT of different light systems over the years, and this works the best of anything I've used. The Streamlight puts out a really good useable light and is about 1/2 the price of Surefire. I don't like rechargeables for weapon lights. Good batteries last a long time and can be changed in under a minute. A rechargeable always goes dead right when you need it.
One of my builds if it helps.
The only issue is muzzle blast on the light but I have a warden blast deflector on it so that has not been an issue. The warden is not on it in the photo.
Sons Of Liberty 13.75 upper with a 2.5" warden brake/blast deflector.
Sons lower as well all have custom color finish.
Hand guard is special (forget the brand) but it was significantly lighter than the OE part. The grip is custom fit by me. It came out looking factory.
Really really accurate light weight and soft shooting rifle. Probably my best do it all rifle I have.
Should give my son credit as he researched and picked all the parts and assembled it.
In reply to Rodan :
The wedge is just because there is some slop between the receivers I'd like to tamp down. But it isn't critical, just fiddly.
The light looks good. My front guard doesn't have a full rail, so I'd have to either ditch the flip sights or find an Mlock solution. Not an issue.
In reply to barefootcyborg5000 :
Mine is actually mounted to the M-lok on the side of the handguard with an offset rail mount (Magpul MAG604). The packaging works better for a 45* mount than mounting off the top rail.
On new 300blkout build am running the magnifier as normal flip-to-right since am right eye dominant and don't want it blocking left eye. Flips down and up quick with shooting hand while using offhand to hold the BCM vertical foregrip. No issue with brass touching it because using a TBR Operator Mid-length brass catcher...good for catching 150 cases of 300blk/5.56 before needing to be emptied...which is easy with zippered bottom. All my semi-autos have rail for running the TBR brass catchers... no more hunting for brass in the sand and prickly vegetation all around, zero brass pickup time (have a dump pouch I put all the empty cases from the brass catchers into.)
Just got the gun zeroed on the 4th @ 100 yards... wasn't cycling the subs unsurpressed but would suppressed with my dad's HUXWRX suppressor. I've adjusted the gas block adjustment screw 1/2 turn out and need to test if will cycle unsurpressed now. Eventually will get my own suppressor...
In reply to Vracer111 :
My buddy got a gray birch 22 that wouldn't cycle unsuppressed, but works flawlessly with so he now has another can waiting govt approval.. kind of funny.
Im debating buying one of the aero blem lowers that a local shop has listed cheap. Maybe it'll be a better/tighter fit to the aero upper and I can sell or save the Anderson for another project.
Im eager to get the purple thing out Saturday and test out that new dot and magnifier. Should be fun.
My 308 Aero has slight amount of slop between the upper and lower receivers... not that bad but just a bit of movement. The PSA lower with Wilson combat billet upper on the 300BLK setup has almost zero movement...very nice tight fit. Am using an accu-wedge though probably not needed, but was in the lower for when was running the 5.7x28 upper. Stainless shims for front pin slop (Power Custom 148030 shim kit) + accu-wedge can tighten up a loose fit pretty well. Billet uppers seem to fit nice and tight on standard lowers. Use feeler gauge to see how much gap you have between the front pivot pin block on the upper and the lower on each side of it. While my sisters were over visiting for the week for the 4th, I swapped out a railed upper with BCM vertical grip and Primary Arms micro 3X prism scope I had for one of my sisters' DPMS billet M4 style upper with MBUS sights. She was happy with how it shot and let me keep her DPMS billet upper in exchange. Upper fits just as tight as the Wilson Combat billet upper on the PSA lower... really nice. So now I want to build up an SPR 5.56 upper using that DPMS billet upper.
In reply to Antihero :
I had to go through this poor thing to figure out why it was imitating a machine pistol, pretty sure the trigger spring was in the wrong location and not giving upward pressure to the trigger bar. Oh the wonders of CZ52's....lol I'd love to find one with a 9mm barrel so I could ream it to 38super.
In reply to WOW Really Paul? :
Nice! I wish I had grabbed one years ago, I remember Shotgun News having a cz52, a 9mm barrel, holster and some ammo for like.....$109
In reply to Antihero :
Those days are gone, I'll probably end up getting one and trying to track down an armorer's kit for all the spare parts. The tt33 can be found in 9mm if you look enough, so maybe that will be a better option.
In reply to WOW Really Paul? :
Didn't Zastava import a 9mm Tokarev too? I know they had a Baby Tok (m88a) but I think they did a full size too.
The m88a is cool as well, shoots super super low though, I need to file the front sight
Picked up an aero blem lower yesterday. Also a brick of 22 and active ear muffs.
Tonight had a buddy come over and we both switched out all the fixings to the new receivers. Just doing guy stuff in the living room while wife and kids are away for the weekend. Good times.
New lower is their M16A4 clone. It has the aero logo, smaller than normal, and the safety has "burst" stamped in it so I look super cool. The big thing is Aero has a sof tipped screw in the lower to take up the slop between the receivers. Which is awesome. I was unaware until buddy pointed it out. No need for an accu-wedge. Gonna take it out tomorrow. Also cleaned and lubed it for the first time since building.
I feel accomplished, managed to zero the 1-8 Strike Eagle on my ptr91, zero the Redfield peep sight on my Krag carbine(it's droppin nickels), and set and staked the front sights on my k98 and Finn m91.
Picked up another blem. This time in the form of an aero upper with no forward assist. Now, the big question. Paint or no?
that's the outgoing unit. For reference, the buffer tube, grip, barrel, and muzzle device are all staying black. So, do I paint the upper purple, paint it a different color, or leave it black and beautiful?
Coloring/camoing is nice, but so is black. I will say if you want a nice coating that dries hard kind of like Cerakote, try Duracoat. Pricey, but works very well and is more durable than spray paint. I used it on the Blackfeather RS chassis for the M1A and really like it. It just takes quite a while to dry... best to let it sit for at least 3 days before assembling/using so it fully sets up and is completely hardened.

Am thinking of maybe Duracoating an 18" SPR upper setup will be building up soon... have everything ordered but barrel coming in this week, barrel is backordered and a good month+ out from availability. Will be using upper receiver and BCG/CH already have.
For optic seriously thinking of going with an Arken EPL4 6-24×50... want light weight and quality at a low price. Really liking the layout of the MIL VPR reticle they have...

I have one of these and wouldn't hesitate to buy another if I were looking for another optic in that magnification range. It's very good, and better than some big name scopes I've looked through at 2-3x the price...
