I watched this yesterday and almost immediately went into a nerd rant. Zero mention of Spiderman in the trailer. We just go from Eddie Brock being a quirky reporter to him being "infected" with the Symbiote via some bad guy. But when he does show up as Venom, he clearly resembles Spiderman. They hint at a "reluctant good guy" vibe like Ghost Rider but that bugs the crap out of me. Venom is a bad guy, that's what he does, he's a villain.

It is a Columbia Pictures film, which did all the Spiderman films and Ghost Rider, but I'm just not excited to see this one. Having said that, it can't be as bad as Topher Grace's Venom:

Spider-Man is not going to be in it, partially because its set in San Francisco, partially because of the weirdo movie rights with Spider-Man. Also, Venom has not been a bad guy in a long time, both as Eddie Brock and Flash Thompson/Agent Venom. He's moved much more into Punisher-style anti-hero. They are adapting the "Lethal Protector" and "Planet Of The Symbiotes" storylines, which paints Venom in more of a brutal hero light, whom actually fights alongside Spider-Man

He looks pretty cool. I want to see carnage.

I wish studios would just give up on trying to revive dead comic book heros that they don't own the rights of key characters.

It seems to me, Sony's Marvel Universe would be good to sell Venom to MCU for an outrageous price, and spend that money on characters they can actually develop. Or beg and plead to let them use Spidey here and there. Either way, they are missing the biggest single character their other 14 or so characters need in order to be relevant.

At least DC is all under one roof.

Actually, I think the whole symbiote / VENOM / whatever thing is the weakest part of the Marvel Universe.  I don't really have any interest in seeing this, based on what I've read of the comics.

A few weeks ago, I picked up Venom #164 to get caught up with what Marvel has been doing with him. Yep, they've made him into an anti-hero kinda character. I'm on the fence after seeing the trailer. Some of the special effects seem a bit weak, but maybe they'll be less odd in the full movie.  I hope it doesn't suck.

In reply to Duke :

I meant, Sony Marvel Universe is missing out on Spiderman, which makes all the other characters they have they kind of irrelevant. Sony has rights to about 14 or so other Spiderman characters/villains.

I always liked Venom and Carnage, and I have a feeling what Sony is lining up to do is rewrite Venom's origin story, then have him fight the baddies they've still got with the webslinger not necessary to the story.

Actually, it's Sony who still has Spider-Man. Disney/Marvel has to borrow Spider-Man from them and can only use him in a set amount of movies.

Really? I did not know that. I wonder if Tom Holland's contracts stipulate if he can play Spiderman outside the MCU.

I'm pretty sure he can do an unlimited amount of Sony Marvel movies, but Sony basically loans him to Disney/Marvel, along with any other Spider-Man characters. Like I said, its really strange and kind of hard to understand.

I get why they are changing Venom's origin story around, because honestly some of it kinda sucks and is really weird. After all, Spider-Man got the suit after the Avengers and other heroes got kidnapped by the Beyonder and placed on Battleworld, and he bought some black goo from an alien merchant to repair a damaged suit, that turned out to be a captive symbiote.

I do find it odd that they say "Sim-bye-oat", when "Sim-bee-oat" has always been the accepted pronunciation

I'm not so sure. Typically when we say "Symbiotic relationship" we're not saying "Sim-bee-oat-ik".

...but I also meant that Tom Holland, the actor...could he do Spiderman in Sony Marvel movies?

In reply to pheller :

I know regular pronunciation of it is "sim-bye-oat" but it seems like in most video games/animated series/interviews, the Venom/Carnage lifeform (called a Klyntar, which is kinda stupid sounding) has always been called a "sim-bee-oat" .

And yeah, I think Tom Hardy could be in Sony Marvel movies. I think the reason there is no Spider-Man in this film is that A) Venom can kinda stand on his own as a character, seeing as how he can be a hero when the situation calls for it and B) Tom Holland pretty much wrapped up filming for Homecoming, then jumped into the back-to-back filming of Avengers 3 and Avengers 4. So if Sony wanted to include Spider-Man in this film, it would have pushed it back quite aways, and they are trying to get the Spider-Man universe moving.

Spiderman is the last of the big players Disney doesnt own, with the recent acquisition of fox media. I'm sure they're just waiting for the next pile of gold bricks to arrive before they give them to Sony for spiderman rights.

Also, Disney still doesn't have the solo rights to The Hulk or any of his characters. Hence why we have yet to get a solo Hulk movie from Disney/Marvel, and they worked the Planet Hulk plotline into Thor: Ragnarok. Universal still owns the rights, and while Disney can use the Hulk as a character in other films, they can't make a strictly Hulk movie. Which means for the time being we won't see a She-Hulk film/TV series. And that makes me sad.

I missed the last few decades of Venom character development in the comics. I'm old school and while the real Venom origin story is pretty whacko, having him as a "good guy" just seems wrong to me. To me, this is Venom:

The trailer didn’t really do anything for me.  All the comic book movies and reboots and other nonsense are starting to get hard to keep track of, seem a bit stale, and just remind me of the line from Bo Burnham’s “Repeat Stuff”:

“We know it’s not right....

And we know it’s not funny...

but we’ll stop beating this dead horse when it...stops spitting out money!!!!

but until then.....we will repeat stuff”

Yeah, but universal is paying those licensing rights to Disney now, which is hilarious to me.
