A friend of my father's was a Jug pilot in the war. He told some great stories, though I'm sure that as a 10-year-old kid, I got the sanitized version. He did fly more than one mission with combat against Me-163s, though, late in the war.
P-47H, one of 2 airframes fitted with a Chrysler inverted V-16 engine. Didn't really pay off and the idea was dropped in favor of bigger radials:

P-47 is up there in my top three along with the P-38 and P-40. Funny how the RAF hated the P-47, but the USAAF and the Soviets absolutely adored them. Granted, the Russians also liked P-39s, so that may not be the most glowing endorsement.
