I like the idea of hanging it from the ceiling. I'm going to measure tomorrow and see how much headroom I would give up by building a platform with some 3" high density foam that lives against the ceiling and cranks down for sleeping.

When I was a kid my parents had a 73 VW camper. Westfalia seems to have been the big one over here, but in Britain Danbury was the most popular conversion company. Our had a pop up similar to this one where the whole room went up rather than a hinge on the side or one end. Up top in there were two cots similar to the yacht one shown above with a narrow gap in the middle. Me and my sister used to sleep up there with my parents 'down stairs' in the van.

Back on topic. Do you have the van yet? If not why not buy an Econoline Conversion van or 10 seater? My old 85 E250 Conversion van had a back seat that folded down into a queen(ish) sized bed. I took that all over the Mid-West autocrossing inc going to Nationals when it was in Topeka. I took all my racing and camping gear in there for up to a week at a time just scrounging showers off friends in hotel rooms. It then towed me and my race car when I was racing IT. Cover the carpet with a tarp and it stays clean as well and is infinitely more comfortable that a bare van.

If you already have the van why not sell it and trade up?
