153 pounds each, and they were buried 3 feet down in a engine room with no good way to lift them into place. Two house batteries, one start battery. No clue about the cost, but they weren't cheap.

You can just see the three battery boxes behind my father.

The engines are 330hp Cummins 5.9L.

You'll get around to pretty much that same setup with the bus before too long!

From what I understand, one of the drivers to doing 4 6V batteries instead of 2 12V is that each individual battery is a bit lighter and easier to manipulate.

That is a beautiful boat! I would feel pretty comfortable eating a meal off the floor of the engine compartment so I can only imagine what the cabin must be like!

My father is pretty anal about taking care of it. I would be too if it was mine.

I don't have any pictures of the salon when it's assembled, but this is a wide angle of the above shot. It is a good looking boat considering it's 15 years old.

I don't have a lot of pictures, but this is what I have.

It's a 2002 42' Symbol Classic Trawler, made in Taiwan. It tips the scales at about 40k pounds. Power is the two 330 hp Cummins turbo diesels driving 2:1 gears and 25" props. Top speed is 21 knots, or about 24 miles per hour if you can afford to feed it. My father spends most of his time at 7-9 knots which nets him about 2.5 mpg.

Docked in Rossport on Lake Superior.

The galley.

The engine room with the salon floor in place. Not huge, but at least passable for the daily checks.

I did find a picture of the back of the salon.

Thunder Bay on Lake Superior.

That trawler is bigger and nicer than most of the apartments I've lived in

What am I doing with my life??

No doubt. Forget RVing after retirement, I think I'd rather live on that and just meander from place to place.

In reply to Pete Gossett:

They do a fair amount of that. This summer is the first time the boat has been home in 5 years. They spent a lot of time in Canada, the 1000 Islands, and the Great Lakes. The boat would spend winters in storage in Brewerton NY.

Their plan for this fall was to spend it on the Chesapeake Bay, but mom slipped on a wet deck at home and cracked her ankle. That makes it pretty difficult to get around a boat and handle the lines. It will probably be next spring before they head out again unless my dad can convince mom to spend the winter south of here.

At 79 years old, they won't be able to handle the boat much longer and he wants to spend as much time on it as possible.

Jeez - I just went to look at an '04 Chaparral 204ssi and thought "WTF am I doing? This is a lot of boat for a noob with a Tacoma to get started with." And that's only the size of the dinghy hanging off the back of that

That there is a whole 'nother league. That is almost a berkeleying ship.

I subscribe to a couple of YouTube channels run by some nomad RV/boat types. One couple recently bought a 46' boat to do the "great loop" with. Another has a 43' catamaran and are currently heading towards to Panama Canal.

Part of me is jealous of their lifestyle. Part of me recognizes the sacrifices they've made to have that lifestyle and I'm not sure I could do that.

Either way, it's fun to watch their adventures from the comfort of my living room.

I suppose using a crane to get the batteries in/out isn't practical?

Yes. I think that's how you know things have gotten serious.

That is a sweet boat, and while you're sure not going to be running one while poor, it looks like you can get them for around $200k used and that's in the "nice RV" budget range. Operating it's going to be more expensive, but it's still not exactly Bill Gates territory.

And now for some reason I want to do the Great Loop. I'd never heard of it before. It would be fun to have an Ohio flagged boat out on the ocean.

Very nice boat. The Great Loop has been coming up more in mine and SWMBO's retirement discussions. Hell, I've been keeping an eye out for large trailerable (25') power boats with the idea of vacationing up and down the ICW for a week or two at a time.

EDIT: and for anyone wandering about the Loop, here's a LINK

I know some Ohioans out of Catawba who have done it. They were snow birds so they take the boat south to Florida and then return the next spring via boat again to Ohio.

I wonder how many have extended the loop and skipped the Hudson and going up the coast to the mouth of the St. Lawrence...

Mom and Dad have done the loop twice, and then gone back to visit the northern parts again. Summer before last we spent a week with them on Lake Superior. Last summer they left Brewerton NY, went through Montreal, and Quebec City and down the St Lawrence Seaway all the way out to Saquenay before heading south to home. Dad tried to get Mom to go out to Nova Scotia and through the Bay of Fundy and down the coast of Maine, but Mom doesn't like big water.

They have put better than 30K miles on the boat in the last 5 years.

If they find themselves in northern Lake Michigan just east of Manistique, have them wave at my cottage. Bright red roof, can't miss it.
We see a couple of boats close to that size at the local municipal marina each summer. They're impressive.
