There is a lot of over thinking going on in this thread.
Hess put up some cheap stuff that works.
For a cheap, no nonsense... used, don't wanna practice, don't wanna think about it, don't wanna clean it obsessively... easy to conceal, hard to shoot yourself in the cock pistol you really can't go wrong with a .38 special wheel gun from a good name brand.
Stopping power arguments and other magazine masturbation articles aside.. It will kill a man dead and its really available for about two hundred bucks at the used gun dealer near you.

There you go. But I'm enjoying the rest of the discussion. It's a world I'm not familiar with.

the interwebz already told what its gonna be anyway
Whatever you do, don't get a Hi-Point. They are absolute crap; cheap for a reason.
I also recommend the .40 round, good balance of stopping power and capacity. I carried a HK USP .40 for a while that I bought from a LEO for $500 with a bunch of magazines, found it on armslist.com which is exactly what it sounds like: craigslist for guns.
Get a Glock 19 you will have 15+1 capacity of 9mm ammo in a compact size. Handgun stopping power is a myth shot placement is more important. Load it with a premium hollow point to prevent over penetration. I suggest Winchester Ranger, Federal HST, or Speer Gold Dot.
Here is a police trade in one.

This is true.

It would be cheaper to just get "I'M AN IDIOT" tattooed on your forehead.

Can I use the shells that have the little metal arrows in them instead of pellets? My oldest brother sent me some of the arrows from Viet Nam way back when. He carried a .45 and a sawed off shotgun.
No, 2 3/4" #4 BUCK is my preferred round, perfectly adequate at across the room distances, least likely to go kill my neighbors. Many prefer #1 or 00, if you live in the middle of nowhere and really truly want to ruin somebody's day, 3" 15 pellet 00 buck is the most hardcore shotshell you can buy.
Getting a bit OT, but... I have a handgun that I bust clays with at 100 yards. I do it a bit different, though. First shot shoots out the orange center and leaves the black ring intact. Then the next shot you bust the ring. It's more challenging that way and you get 2 targets out of 1 clay. Contender 223REM Super 14, on the bench.

Agree. I started competitive shooting in 1955 and have tried almost every variation of it there is. A few years ago when my eyesight started going I sold most of my guns.
I kept the Taurus 85 stainless steel 3" barrel pistol and the Mossberg 500 home defense shotgun.
Whenever discussion of .38s starts, I have to ask, weight aside, why not just go .357? Just as cheap to shoot(practice w/ .38s) and much better knockdown power.
I went with the PX4 Storm Subcompact in .40 cal. To me, 10 rounds is plenty and I like the heavier caliber. I also like the manual safety and the external hammer, along with DA/SA action. I may add a light to the rail, although I usually prefer a separate light at home. More flexibility. While not as cheap as some other brands out there, I am a fan of Beretta and the quality and performance outweigh some cost savings to me. I plan to add a full-sized storm down the road for the range, then I can drop an even large mag in the baby!

Thatd probably feel like uncomfortable toy in my meathooks. Cool looking shooting iron though

You could, and im sure it would be cheaper but nowhere near as much fun

Yeah, like that one, but with a Burris 3x9 extended eye relief scope on it. I use the little orange 1" sticker dots as my 100 yard targets. You can't even see them without the scope. Golf ball size targets at 100 are no challenge.
I saw a Turkish made 9mm today. Polymer frame, all the modern stuff, and priced in the low 300's, brand new. I've read good reviews on those in the gun mags. You might consider something like that too.

I seem to be attracted to the 9mm and .40. I would have to save for a while but oh well.
What about this one? Too little?
Taurus 1-709031FS PT709 Slim 7+1 9mm 3"

or you could go with this (yes it is a pistol)
What you need to do is actually go to a gun shop, check out a bunch of different types of handguns, like with me, my meathooks are big and alnost all of the subcompacts dont fit my hand, and a lot of the compacts dont fit. Personally the xd series from Springfield in fullsize fits my hands perfectly. But you need to go check out what fits comfortably in your hand and only can do that in person. Dont get excited and make an impulse buy either, check out lots of guns even new higher end guns because you.might find that $1000 dollar pistol you love used for 3 or 4 hundred
Shop around some ranges will even rent you a sidearm to shoot to get the full feel of it too
In reply to rebelgtp:
No, that's a SBR loopholed onto a cheaper AOW stamp.

What GPS said. And I'm more accurate with my Ruger LCR than anything else. Cheap, concealable, and I can accurately put holes in stuff with it.
But again, go to the range and rent/borrow, and see what works for you.

Thats considered a pistol? please explain...
The vertical foregrip is a no-no, as outlined in the link above. Without that, yeah, it's considered a pistol. The thing strapped on his arm is called an "arm brace." The BATFE even approved it and the manufacturer provides a copy of the letter.
